Monaco Grand Prix

Monaco

To most motorsport fans the Monaco Grand Prix needs very little introduction. It is one of the most challenging, most prestigious, and most glamorous races in the world. To some though, it is also considered a dangerous and frustrating anachronism.

Nelson Piquet once said that racing at Monaco was "like trying to cycle round your living room", but also added that "a win here was worth two anywhere else".

Circuit de Monaco

The circuit is unique, iconic, and distinctive. The names of the corners are embedded in Grand Prix history, and few other F1 tracks can match the longevity of it's general layout, which dates back to 1929.

The circuit is famous for it's tight hairpins, elevation changes, harbour frontage, and of course it's unique tunnel.Amongst the drivers, Monaco is known as probably the most challenging on the F1 calendar, where even a moment's lack of concentration will be punished, due to the lack of run off areas.

Winners

Ayrton Senna has the most F1 victories in Monaco, with six wins, followed by Graham Hill, and Michael Schumacher with five, and Alain Prost with four.

Of the current crop of drivers, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel all have two wins apiece.

McLaren are by far the most succesful constructor at Monaco with 15 race wins. Ferrari have ten, and Lotus and Mercedes both have seven.

Last year's winner was Sebastian Vettel, who extended his lead over Lewis Hamilton to 25 points. Second was Kimi Raikonnen, providing Ferrari's first 1-2 finish since the 2010 German GP.

Crowds

The Monaco GP attracts around 200,000 spectators, which is about average for an F1 race.
