Extreme Slotting - "The Final Run"
#51

Being a controller nerd, do raid drivers run basic resistor controllers? And if so, what ohm-age?

I'm imagining that with all that resistance in the 4x4 drivetrains, you maybe need to go with lower ohms than normal?

I just use the same as for the Rally (ie a 35ohm DS controller)

Wavegreen Just a reminder that the Proxy Registration/Payment date is the 1st May.

So I would like to have your entry details and payments either before of by that date, so I can organise the packaging for transporting the vehicles, Results database etc.

The cost is £8.50 per vehicle and you are allowed up to 3 vehicles per entrant (in different categories)

I will start an Official entry list as from today.

I am not intending to organise another "Extreme Slotting Proxy" series after this year, so it might be your last chance to participate.

Can I ask why Graham?
They seem well supported and you have introduced us to new suppliers of dedicated RAID vehicles, it would be a shame to see all that go to waste

That's the problem really, it is not so well supported to make it a viable financial self supporting series.
I had introduced changes from last time in order to attract additional participants, like with the "Dakar" Category so that non RAID based cars could be introduced. And additionally I had introduced the "bespoke" suppliers from the continent who offer more up to date versions of Raid vehicles, all of which I thought would attract a wider audience.

However the fact is that I have gained only 2 new entrants, and 4 of the previous ones have opted out this year (including yourself).

The internal foam packaging costs make a lot of difference as it has to made to fit the very different vehicles you get in this proxy competition, so you cant use the foam inserts from previous Proxy series. Last year I lost money on running this Proxy series as I did with the Grand Prix one as you need 15+ entrants to break even to cover all the costs.

But also there is the time issue, I spend a lot of time behind the scenes ensuring each series runs smoothly, organising the schedule with hosts, issues regarding Transporting the cars from one location to another etc. So I am thinking that less of that would be better for me, I am probably the only Proxy administrator anywhere who tries to organise 3 Proxy series in a year.

I have thought of a better or more cost effective way of running a RAID car Proxy as one day event, which would make it easier to administrate, but this needs to be discussed with others before the idea could be announced.

But I am a great believer in change for the better, so I feel optimistic in that there could be life after "Extreme Slotting" for those off road vehicles  Sun

A few of us in our club have Raid/Dakar vehicles but we don't have a track to run them on to be able to set them up and practice.  Consequently it is a class that isn't popular at all.

I must have half a dozen of these vehicles, Ninco, SCX and a couple of Mitoos, two I bought, the rest acquired during part ex for my R/C car gear but they never get used.

Life is like a box of Slot cars... Cool Drinkingcheers

R1 (BMW X3) and R2 (Buggy) for me again. Payment sent...

I do hope there can be a future for these Rally Raid proxies.

There are other viable formats for proxies - a single-venue event over a weekend or two works well and I've used that for the HO drag racing that started during the 2020 lockdown and also with the TR7 proxy in 2021. Both were successfully run on a shoestring budget. There's also the option - like the WHO Rally-Sprint - of an event that takes place over a handful of local venues with cars transported by road rather than post. The three 'southern' stages in the current rally proxy saw cars transported between myself, Jeremy & Pip. Both formats cut out the hassle and cost of unreliable couriers and the need for expensive bespoke packaging. It hands the postage and return postage costs to the entrants, plus the generosity of hosts donating a gallon or two of fuel (or some electrical charge).

Maybe 2-3 events a year on a more local basis can be the future of more niche-interest proxies like this? Rules can be agreed and championship points awarded.
