Triple Crown Builds
#41

(15th-Feb-22, 01:46 AM)Brumos RSR Wrote:  The car is now the same weight, with the weight redistributed, a light weight interior has been added, a wider track and a drop of one tooth on the gear to make up for the shorter tires. I will trim out the driver and passenger windows and section the remaining windows to cut more weight.

Well, even with the work done, she’s a flipper still smoother and faster.

2nd shakedown at SMSRC

I think Pendle flattered the mustang, long can motor, long gearing and substantial weight suited the  flowing track well, at SMSRC it was a little bit trickier on the tighter sections when that weight needed to quickly transfer from one side to the other. But it's smooth and predictable so I'm just going to oil the tyres a but more and I think it is finished.

The AMG was awful again:
Symptoms: jerky power delivery, noisy, sometimes stopped on low throttle, not responsive.

I've taken the motor out and tested on a power supply and tacho and it runs fast, smooth and consistent so I think it's ok.

With the motor out the rear axle spins freely in the bearings.

The gear and pinion mesh seems ok, both slot it parts so should be decent enough quality.

I've stripped everything out, removed the hot glue around the motor, cleaned the soldering up and replaced braids and guide wire with some nsr stuff. New nsr supergrips on the rear and glazed the fronts. I'm hoping that will sort it.  Final shakedown before they have to get in the post tomorrow night.

Last update and some tech specs before cars get posted tomorrow. I managed to get a quick shakedown in at SMSRC on Thursday.

The mustang continues to be a lovely thing of wonder, I might get a few more transam cars and build them up it's been very rewarding, although it was fighting me at first, getting the right combination of pod and wheel diameter to meet the ground clearance rules but not foul the body was a tedious experience!

Pioneer mustang body, generic large saloon lexan interior
Amato chassis
0 offset slot.it inline pod
10/24 slot.it gears (probably a bit long for twisty tracks)
Nsr front 16*8 hubs glazed zero grips
Nsr rear  16*10 air hubs,ultragrips 19*10
Revoslot shallow guide
Sideways baby raptor motor (approx 17400)

The AMG continued to frustrate, feels like the motor couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding but the tacho tells me the motor is quick. Too late I have guessed that the tyres are just too wide/sticky, they were nsr supergrips doped with 3 in 1 oil until tacky to the touch. Instinct tells me to make the tyres as sticky as possible but after recently  coming unstuck (pun intended) using ultragrips on an nsr F1 I have decided to swap the wheels/tyres out for the pair that were used (and did quite well) on a slot.it r8 in the le mans proxy. I haven't had chance to test this combo so it's pure blind luck if it goes well!

Scalextric AMG body/interior and chassis and motor.
Slot it 17.3 * 8 alloy wheels, nsr zero grips on the front brm f15 on the rear.
Lights and that strange thing on the motor removed.
Guide adapted with brass rod to take a scaleauto guide, trimmed to be within the rules.
Slot.it pinion and gear
Chassis sanded to remove any binding.

Good luck to everyone!

Here we go again then, hours of pondering motor choice, gear ratios, tyre compounds, weight placement only to realise too late you don't have any time for that as it needs to get in the post tomorrow so you throw whatever looks like it might fit at it and hope for the best  Thumbup

Looks like I am heading towards a "Silver Arrows" and Copper Climax team for class A and Class B but still some work to do.

As it's a proxy entry and you're building for other people to race it and need to build in reliability I'd put an axle spacer between the bearing and crown gear to stop the gear moving.

...and don't forget the pinion  Thumbup

Life is like a box of Slot cars... Cool Drinkingcheers

Haha  it was just a rough test fit to make sure everything went together, there was a bit of rubbing between pod and chassis somewhere so need to get the files out. Noted on the spacers, I've never bothered with anything like that for club racing, I occasionally race nsr f1s and even got rid of the axle spacers to save a bit of weight. With being able to fettle it after every 3mins of running I've not had any problems but I think I will go all out with trimming the motor shaft flush and spacers inside and out side the pod to keep everything where it should be.

One thing I found on the nsr F1 class is the alloy hubbed gears from slot.it (the only change allowed apart from wood guide) seem to run smoother and wear less than the brass ones, and I think they weigh a bit less too.
