I hope my car won't be detained nor taxed by customs when it will cross the Channel both ways.

Hi Marcury,

This is a very good question, people on here do send cars for Prox's in Australia and in the USA but I am not sure that there is much experience sending cars from or to the EU since January.

I read on Gov.UK Tax  website:
Tax and customs for goods sent from outside the UK
To avoid VAT tax the goods must be described on the customs documents as "Gifts of less than £39 in value"

And in regard to Customs Duty,
Customs duty is applied if the goods or gifts are worth more than £135.

I will also need to find out the rules for sending the cars back to you in France as I don't know if this is similar or different ?
I think you should check with your government websites to see what is required

Hi Graham,

French customs have seen too many gifts, so they pick and open several goods every day and tax...
The car is 139€ / 120£ without the shipping, but it is not a sale so there is no bill/invoice.

I've sent an email to the French customs. I will tell you their answer.

Best regards.

There is a brief discussion of import issues with proxy races in this thread: https://slotracer.online/community/showt...p?tid=1974

Both Leo and I have had some experience shipping internationally with these sorts of events. UK Customs require 'Returned Goods' on the label and/or a low value on the CN22 customs declaration. The important thing is these packages do not involve a commercial transaction and will be returned to the country of origin.

Thank you Woodcote.
I understand that if I put the car into a cardboard with plastin bubbles to maintain it and a paper to explain that should be ok.
About the returned goods and low value, it is made in Spain and the price is on the website so I won't play this option because since January customs are very sensitives between UK and France.

UK Customs will look at the outside of the box only. If you mark it with a retail price, they won't look any further - they will charge Graham 20% of that value, plus £8 handling fee.

However, UK Customs communicated with our proxy drag racing group and confirmed that no VAT or customs fees should be chargeable on parcels going to and from proxy races - and the way to alert customs to this is to write "returned goods" on the parcel and the CN22 form. A letter inside (as Leo suggests) is an excellent idea, but it is very rare for a small parcel to be opened, let alone for a customs officer to identify the make and model of a slot car and then look up the retail price online.

We've had 20+ parcels going to and from the US and Canada in the past 14 months - only once did someone forget to mark the package 'returned goods' and I was charged £60 VAT and handling fee. Every parcel marked 'returned goods' has sailed through the system without being held in customs. It is also worth checking with French customs, of course - they may have a different procedure.

As Andy stresses, it is wise to state that the item will be or is being returned to the original owner and is only temporarily in the UK/wherever.
