Hello,
First of all I wish you a Merry Easter ! You can cath every chocolate eggs you want but dont get the Covid once ;-)
Back to the Dakar classes. There are classes depending of the type of the vehicules (cars are not in the same category than trucks or quads - I need to check with the organiser for quads). Then there are classes depending of the equipement of the vehicule.
Yes, the "Out of box" category means that you can only :
- change the tires
- add lead
- remove the magnet
- change the braids (to be confirmed)
Out of box cars from Mitoos are not allowed in this category. A list of manufacturers must be provided, such as Ninco, SCX (Scalextric in Spain), MSC Competition (now part of Scaleauto), Avant Slot.
If you want to change anything else you move to the upper category which is indead "open", where you can do all what you want, up to make your own chassis or body...
Magnet or not magnet ? That is a good question. In France I think that no race is allowed with magnets (but many drivers are using motors with magnet effect :-( ). Is that really an advantage for a Rallye Raid race ? Let's try and take a stock after the proxy. For myself I can no longer play with a magnet, but I can easily understand people would prefer to run with a magnet.
If I play (I think I will), I may prepare this car (open category).

My only experience will the 1/32 scale Raid vehicles is running a pair of Ninco cars (a Pajero and a BMW X5) on part standard Ninco, part Ninco off-road track with and without the Raid obstacles. They are great fun and a really different driving experience. Neither of the two cars came with traction magnets (although there's a 'pod' under the car for them to be fitted), plus the NC-7 'Raider' motor has next to no magnetic downforce - and it sits nearly 10mm off the rails of standard Ninco track.
I really like the classes Marcury describes - no magnets, a simple entry-level grouping of RTR Ninco / SCX / Scaleauto / MSC / Avant Slot cars with very basic mods (tyres, ballast, braids) and then an open class. And - of course - the option of Trucks and Quads!
There's the issue that Brian raised a while back about not all brands of Raid cars being compatible with the more extreme SCX off-road sections - I'm almost certain the drop arms on my Ninco cars would not reach the rails on the high 'ramp' obstacles on this track...
It would be really helpful to get confirmation of what track pieces (and accessories) are used in established Rally-Raid races where the range of RTR brands Marcury mentioned compete together. Most of the videos I've watched on YouTube seem to show Ninco off-road track without the obstacles fitted.
There are a lot of SCX and Ninco cars around for £50-ish (with a few £20-30 bargains cropping up from time to time). Pendles have Avant Slot and Scaleauto kits for less than £50, plus various spare and replacement tyres. They also have the chassis and parts for an accessible entry point into the open class. So it accessible, even to those of us who didn't pick up these cars in their heyday.
A proxy sounds a lot of fun for those lucky enough to host a stage. Getting together at some point to race our own cars sounds even better!

HELLO HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THE LIVE EXTREME E EVENT ON TVTHE FINAL IS AT NOON TODAY
I have now Confirmation that our own "Extreme Slotting" event can be scheduled for the Month of October
I have attached the race format and Rules below. There is 3 classes proposed, as this is a first time event of this kind in England I have proposed one class with magnets as original off shelf car supplied, the other 2 without magnets, for standard and unlimited classes. But I will wait to see what response we get for this event and decide if we need 3 classes later.

Yes, Ninco cars are those with the shortest arm. When we prepare a track for a challenge we try to take car of this limit when we place obstacles. Sure, cars with long arms are beneficiaries.
About the classes, François, the organiser of the FOLM Dakar Dantan (videos below) is interested in your proxy. I hope he will soon come here and share his experience.
I think there were only two Rally Raid tracks manufacturers : Ninco and SCX. They both stopped the production of this tracks :-( Second hand market is the only way to get some. The other solution is to create our Rallye Raid tracks by ourseleves. Last option : RSS Raceways is a newcomer who makes wooden tracks for Rallye Raid - interesting.
Here are 2 videos of our little experience in France:
The third edition of this fantastic competition has been switched to May 2022
Edit : Graham has posted the date and technical rules for this 1st Rallye Raid Proxy. Excellent ! Thank's Graham ! I'll prepare and send a car ;-)

the video linked below shows a mod to lengthen the Ninco drop arm throw
it is in Spanish ... but has subtitles that can be in English
the relevant info starts around 3:50 into the video
might be of help to the Ninco entrants

That's really interesting video for improving the Ninco cars.Although the SCX cars probably still have the edge on the drop guide length which is 8cm as apposed to the 4cm length of the Ninco's but I will emphasis to the hosts that if they are using SCX track they must avoid the high level obstacles, I will check what is possible on my SCX set with my selection of off-road cars (SCX,Ninco & Scaleauto) without drop arm modification as it is important to ensure there are no avoidable track limitations for running all types of standard cars.
