I used some of Garth Frudd's aluminium printed wheel inserts in a proxy a while back ( he is on Greggs world wide slot car chat )
they held firm , the wheels were easily trued and balanced and  did not deform at all 
my car did no better or worse  Bigsmile , (as usual) my tuning is the problem 
but they might be an option for you Kev
