Summer Grand Prix Proxy

Checkeredflag Round 8 SMSRC Catalunya  Checkeredflag

Cars arrived at SMSRC all in one piece and presented well. The new transportation method Graham devised seems to have solved the curling braid issues seen in past proxies and so with nothing else to do except tape the tyres and clean the braids it was on to round 8 of the Summer Grand Prix Proxy

Class A

Class A kicked us off with some very nice cars and close racing with Team Cube's smooth Scarab pipping the 'couldnt be more different to drive' point and squirt Mercedes of Mountain View. Another close battle for the final spot on the podium saw TEAM RNLI's Ferrari just get past Roadrunners Merc to third place. Rokers Road's Bugatti was really in a class of its own being a different era of vehicle but still put in respectable lap times only about 10% down.

Class B

Class B was a new breed of car to me, never seen one before but I was impressed with how quick and smooth they were, being able to carry a lot of speed through the corners.

The two Cooper Climaxes (Climaxii?) took the honours with Roadrunners just taking the win by a nose from Court Sport, before looking up to see the results I actually thought it would be the other way round, but the #10 must have just had the edge down the straights.

Another tight finish for third saw Bangers Racing take the bronze medal with Team RNLIs lotus suffering from a bit too much mind beneath it's (lack of) wings as it's higher ground clearance didn't inspire the same sort of confidence through the faster bends.

Class C

Now we are talking, the F1 cars I grew up with! As I had a car in this heat, club chairman Rich took over trigger honours. The top three were streaks ahead in all honesty, super smooth, controllable and quick, on the day the Ferrari of Ruscillo Racing took top honours, with the Shadow of Mountain View not far behind. Honourable mention to Mike Scott's Tyrrell which has the fastest lap but the squareness of the chassis just didn't seem to suit the track as much as the more 'dart like' shape of the top 2, on another day it could easily have won.

My own car didn't even make the podium. Shambles.

Class D

Final class then, the fast boys! Again Rich did the driving, I did the running around putting them back on track   Bigsmile

The McLaren of Courtney Sport was superb with a dominant win, essentially an NSR 86/89 under the 2000s frilly dress it really drove like it was 'Ready to Race'!

My own Dallara managed to sneak a 2nd despite sounding like a bag of spanners in a tumble dryer with Team Cube's stretch limo, I mean Williams, taking the final step on a very closely fought podium.  I can see why the Williams has done well as it was very smooth but on this grippy track it deslotted too often, in part I think due to the guide being so far from the rear wheels it was past the apex of the corner before the rear had even started turning in, causing a lot of three wheel action until eventually the guide would lose the traction battle and slide out. A good build though of what looks a fairly standard car  Yes

Hopefully that gives you a flavour of how the racing went, unfortunately no video this time as some pillock thought it was a bank holiday this weekend and had loads of time to get the racing done only to realise it was only a bank holiday for our friends north of the border!

Thank you to all the participants for allowing us to play with your pride and joys, it was a smaller field for this proxy but the standard of cars was very good as was reflected in lots of close battles throughout the field.

They all survived intact and are packed up for the next and penultimate leg of their journey

Wavegreen Good evening,

Many thanks to South Manchester Slot Car Club for running another great round for us, not so sure I like the sound of the noisy Merc  Banghead, there could be a nasty end to this one for my Class A car

Anyway here are the Standings after Round 9

I will be doing my last Pitlane Review tomorrow, and the cars will be heading over to Mountain View for the very last Round

Wavegreen Good Morning

So it is the very last.......

Pitlane Review
Many thanks again to the South Manchester Slot Racing Club for another nail biting Round, especially for me  Bigsmile

So we are nearing the end of the competition with a few questions still unresolved.
*Will the RoadRunners Merc make it to the finish Ambulance  and could it prove fatal to to the Team results
* Who will win the Legends class Ruscillo Racing's Ferrari or is Bangers Racing Williams still in with a chance.
* Will Courtney Sport get another full set of maximum points with the McLaren, probably  Sun
I can feel that Team medal slipping from my fingers  Rofl

What a finale !

Early Flyers
1st Place - Mountain View - Mercedes W196
2nd Place - RoadRunners - Mercedes W196
3rd Place - Team Cube - Scarab
What a time for the Scarab to show its form, somewhat a little late in the day but nevertheless great to see this runner up eventually make it onto the top of the podium at Manchester. Then there are the woes of the RoadRunners Team who just a few Rounds ago seemed to have the edge on Mountain Views Merc. With the sounds of gearbox problems, it looks like they will be limping home.

Classic
1st Place - RoadRunners - Cooper Climax
2nd Place - Bangers Racing - Porsche 804
3rd Place - Courtney Sport - Cooper Climax
There is some satisfaction that the RoadRunners Cooper out ran Courtney's at Manchester, but following the Merc's demise it is tense in the camp this week.

Legends
1st Place - Ruscillo Racing - Ferrari 126C
2nd Place - Team Tatters - Williams FW07
3rd Place - Bangers Racing - Williams FW11
At last the Ferrari has come good at the penultimate Round, but with only one point in it, could be a very close call for the final.

Modern
1st Place -Courtney Sport -Mclaren MP4/13
2nd Place - Team Cube - Williams FW40
3rd Place - Team Tatters- Dallara
Not the best run for the Williams of Team Cube, but still secure in 2nd place, similarly for the Dallara of Team Tatters. But another stunning Round for the speedy Mclaren of Courtney Sport.

Team Points
The gap is back down to 10 points ahead for RoadRunners, but recent poor running with the Mercedes could spell disaster. Courtney has now moved up to 2nd place and is ready to take full advantage should the RoadRunners Team fall at the last hurdle. To think that Courtney Sport started this event at the bottom of the table after their late entry, their cars are really outstanding

So with DHL keeping us in suspense, hopefully they will turn up today to collect the cars to take them to Wrexham, where our host Paul and guest driver "Steve Hills" will once again be using his "Truspeed Apex Controller" to bring this series to its ultimate conclusion.

So good luck everyone, and especially me.

Hello to all the entrants of the Proxy Race for Summer.
All the cars arrived up the mountain ready for their final race. The weather finally turning to summer here after some rain has fallen in the week. No hosepipe ban here..

Well packed and just a few issues with some cars which were quickly fixed .. braids straightened out ( the Policar track has wide slots.)

I was pushed for time over the weekend so the race was held on a Friday myself and Steve Hill of TRUSPEED were the drivers, Steve obviously racing the class where I was not entered.

It was a great pleasure to race all the cars and the standard of running was great with a few being exceptional.

This is a Policar plastic track with 3 90degree corners one chicane then 3sweeping fast corners which makes the track challenging and adds variety to the race tracks in the competition.

All cars were raced with a TRUSPEED controller where any misgivings of a car can be dialled out to make the car efficient on the track.

Sorry about the last pic . Will address the upside down below.

The classics lived up to their name and gave some speed but a lot of slide on this track, great fun and the top two were really close but the #10 was a fraction quicker over the 20 laps but the #2 got the fastest lap but that pace could not be maintained over the whole 20 laps .

Moving on to the Legends .
Some real quick times with the lap record being recorded ( nothing has really been recorded before I think ? ) but these are fast slots for sure. Ash has a quick car which Maxed it pardon the pun. But second and third were a close run thing . But Graham Leclerc getting the nod. Well done ???

So to the third front engined early birds class. Some great looking cars and a real joy to drive.. Steve says so on this one .. a lot of work making these look authentic ??
Some of rage cars have had a long event and the pace was lacking to their initial outings. So I did not tell Steve which car was which so he just drove the pants of them as he does and this was the result.. ( sorry Graham ???
