Triple Crown - American Road Race Slot Car Proxy Tour

Whoa it feels like I only took my eyes off this for 5 minutes and so much has happened, in the last 3 events I've had a stage win, a last place and 2 DNS! Thanks to all the hosts, I'm going to try to catch up on some of the videos from viking now, I quickly caught a very close class A battle and the presentation and video were excellent, something to think about for the SMSRC round.  Thumbup

Here are the first 3 highlights videos, featuring the full run of each car....

Although a live stream would have been nice, I actually prefer an edited video - a lot more work though! These videos use a similar format to the TR7 proxy weekend I ran last year. The fourth part will either appear later today - or on Tuesday.

Here's the fourth one for you...

This does include the only cat action of the day. There was a lot of lurking, but not a lot of chasing. Yellow cars are her favourite.

Well I certainly appreciate all your hard work on this stage however the rules clearly state that the guide flag can be no more than 6 mm deep 1.7 mm thick and 21.5 mm long therefore if my guide on my cars meet the spec and the track cannot accept these guides the track is out of compliance. If you don’t mind a little extra work would you please measure my guide to confirm there within spec and report back.

The scrutineering report on Page 2 of this thread goes along way to explaining why most of the eight cars were not able to run on this SCX track, but I will go into more details in the Pitlane Review. In reality we were surprised that so many had difficulties, and certainly if it had been the case of just one or two, they could have been probably been made to run with some minor surgery. But with limited time available it was better to not favour the "easy fixes" as this could have been seen as favouritism. All the cars with the recommended NSR low profile 6mm guides were able to run. But we will say more on this today.........

Wavegreen Good Morning,

And many thanks for Andy's well run Devils Dyke Hillclimb stage, it became the "Archilles heel" for some cars, the live streaming became too much of a burden, but we did get some really good video's of the cars, and we did get some different Podium finishers which should be celebrated.

So after a rather controversial stage (more to say about this later) we have the final accumulated results results for stages 1-4

The non -runner cars are allocated 3 points as last place finishers.

So having gathered my thoughts around me and having checked the scrutineering report, we have....

Pitlane Review
The portable assembly Rally type tracks like the Hillclimb are always potentially problematic, plastic tracks like the scalextric or SCX often form " pinch points" at the connections between sections because of the way the track pieces are coming together, and other deformations come into play as well. My own Scalextric Sport mixed with SCX has suffered many of these issues since I had to move the track last winter to relocate the Track room. The Carrera track is much better but even this forms some pinch points due to disconnection and reconnection.

So my point is that even when you test a car out on a straight piece of SCX track during the scrutineering process, it is not the same as running these cars on a long twisty circuit with inclinations and depressions made up on the day for the event.

However during the scrutineering process I did need to trim a couple of the cars guides, even to be able to run them along a isolated SCX straight length. All the others I left as they were as long as they "appeared runnable" . Some car guides of 1.9mm thickness, or length of 23mm, or depth of 7.5mm did indeed still appear to be "runnable" in the SCX straight, probable because the actual braid thickness or guide position in relation to the front wheels enabled it to do so. Thickness is the biggest issue as they guides cannot be easily reduced without dismantling the cars and certainly this was the case in at least 2 of the eight non-runner cars.

Having said all of that, I can see there were one or two anomalies if you refer back to the scrutineer reports. On a positive side Ruscillos Megane ran very well although the guide was deemed out of spec on the scrutineering report. And conversely the Mustang of Team Tatters appeared to be well within the guide requirements yet was found be a problem running. And as Team Cube already commented their Ford GT ran OK last year on much the same type of circuit. So I think there is some food for thought, perhaps only specific guides should be allowed (like the recommended NSR shallow guide) when running this type of multiple track type proxy ?

However both Andy and myself are very disappointed that we could not run all the cars on this stage, but it would have been impractical to have fixed all the car issues on the day. Andy was able to rescue two cars ( RNLI team- TR8 & Rokers Roar -Monte Carlo) with other unrelated running problems from the previous round which he took time out to correct and which enabled them to make the Hillclimb run.

Luckily at least this year there is no more of this type of SCX portable tracks in the series, but they would be used again in the Winter Rally series in many of the stages, so beware.

Just taking a short break......

I personally test on my Scalextric track and once, maybe twice a year on a routed track.  I however and my guess is most of the NA guys are not as familiar with the SCX tracks. I have several Thunderslot “plastic track” guides that I often use. If needed I can send one next series for a tech check. I will check out the NSR guides for future runs also.  Let’s race on and have fun.
