Resin painting issues
#1

I bought 2 of the latest resin bodies from Ocar . They are superb but, having huge issues with painting.

You can see the orange peel effect.  I have sanded the bodies twice, cleaned with toothbrush and cleaner with a grit.  Still having issues with coverage.

Any ideas??

Did you wash them with silicone remover and then dish washing detergent?
What kind of paint ad primer are you using?
If you mix lacquer and acrylic it can do that...,

The coverage is so even over the entire body that it looks more like it's a reaction coming from the paint. I can't imagine the body is that badly contaminated with dirt or oil after being washed.

So many questions...

In the heyday of 1/43 resin kits problems like this were sometimes caused by release agent trapped in tiny pinholes in the body which would leech out when the paint was applied .

I think the modelmakers who built kits for Lambert Ley Street Models used to sort it out by giving the body a thorough wash with cellulose thinners. Sometimes they then sprayed the primer so that it had almost set by the time it hit the model to seal in any left over release agent but this did mean a fair bit of rubbing down to get it smooth again.

The resin used by Starter and Provence Moulage didn't react with cellulose thinners and I would imagine Ocar use similar resins now so there shouldn't be any problems with the body dissolving in the thinners.

thanks for input guys.....

These cars were incredibly 'oily' from the release agent and hence my scrubbing with a cleaner .

An update:  I completely resanded the Ferrari and then sprayed it with Halfords Red primer - got full coverage.

The issue I believe is with the local primers I have been able to lay my hands on as my Halfords grey primer is finished. And by looks of it I cannot get more  due to lockdown and I cannot get across the channel to get some more  Tappingfoot

I assume Halfords is closed in the UK at the moment?

They are open as normal, shops and online but spray can paint cannot be sent in the post.

Royal Mail definitely won't carry spray paint, either domestically or overseas. Most couriers (DHL, UPS etc) will take them by road in the UK, but not internationally. I understand some specialist couriers do - but I imagine it won't be cheap.

My first choice primer for 1/32 models is Halfords, but I use Tamiya Light Grey Fine Surface Primer for HO. It's more expensive (and a smaller can), but I've never had a problem with spraying it on resin bodies from a wide variety of casters from around the world.

Happy to drive over with a car-load of Halfords cans when everything is back to normal Sun

Careful Andy may take you up on that Bigsmile Bigsmile Bigsmile

Issue is here that the model/hooby shops are now closed - so I am coming to a stop uuntil I can source decent primer.  I sprayed another car with red Halfords primer this am and it worked perfectly.
