SRC Porsche 914 Six-Hour Race at Nascot Wood
#1

The SRC Porsche 914/6 GTs have been enjoying some great endurance racing all over the world. Next Sunday, they arrive in Watford for a six-hour race at Nascot Wood. Six teams will be taking part.

Each team has been supplied by SRC with the update of their Porsche 914/6 GT circuit racing kit...

Teams have built up the chassis and decorated the bodies in period style to look something like this...

Motors and pinions will be handed out on the morning of the race. Three of us from Worthing will be joining Nascot Wood superstar Martin Dixson - I'll let you know how we get on...

Not long to go until the race! Doors open for practice at 8am on Sunday, with the all-important Concours d'Elegance at 10.15 and the race starting at 11.

Preparation of our car has taken place in both Hertfordshire and Sussex - Martin building the really important bit (apparently it goes very well on the Nascot Wood Ninco track) and Mike having the fiddly task of putting the body kit together and painting it. All I had to do were the decals...

We've gone for the Brumos Racing 914/6 GT driven by Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood at the 1971 Sebring 12 hours. The car finished fourteenth overall and won the GT2.5 class. With a few extra sponsor decals, the same car and driver line-up  dominated the inaugural IMSA GT Championship in 1971, winning outright at Virginia International Raceway, Bridgehampton and Summit Point and taking a clean sweep of six GTU class wins.

I wonder if anyone else has plumped for the Brumos car and what shade of red/orange/tangerine they went for. We shall see on Sunday.

Good luck Worthing!

I'm constantly surprised by which cars have a racing pedigree.

Well, that was a very enjoyable and successful event at Nascot Wood. Most of the twenty-four racers there yesterday race regularly - or at least occasionally - on the club's superb Ninco track...

Although three of our four-man team were Nascot Wood rookies, the event started very well for Team Brumos. Our car scored 29 out of a possible 30 points in the Concours d'Elegance and Mike picked up the first trophy of the day...

The Concours results also meant extra laps in the race - we would have ten laps added to our final score, the Veterans would have eight, Exiles six, The Outsiders four and Gas Monkey two. West London would have no bonus. So, on the start line, Team Brumos were already in the lead...

The racing was fantastic and the SRC Porsches really nice to drive. For much of the first hour, the gaps between the cars were counted in seconds rather than laps. That did change when the rookies from Worthing got on track. Our local hotshot Martin had suggested we shared out each hour to give us all time and experience on every lane. Martin would start the hour, be comfortably in the top three and set fastest lap after fastest lap. Inevitably, he would close the gap on the teams we were chasing  - and then the rest of us would try our hardest to limit any losses. Starting on a gutter lane, we handed the leaders Gas Monkeys (in the green car) a 36-lap head start after an hour...

Gas Monkeys were in quite a battle with West London at the front - and we were in a battle with The Outsiders for fifth. In the third hour, The Outsiders had car problems and dropped back. Gas Monkey were the other car to have a few gremlins, dropping back to third, with West London (in the blue car) pulling out a gap of sixteen laps over the Exiles (yellow car) in second. We sat 31 laps behind the Veterans...

The midfield was highly competitive - the Exiles, Gas Monkeys and the Veterans kept swapping places. As we passed through the middle lanes, Martin took some big chunks out of our deficit and us three rookie held on or took a couple more laps back. During the fifth hour, we were briefly just 20 laps off second place! Team Brumos ended the penultimate hour 18 laps behind Gas Monkeys in fourth and 23 laps behind Veterans and Exiles who were second and third. However, our final hour on the other gutter lane dropped us back again...

At the end of the six hours, the Coucours d'Elegance bonus laps were added in. As a result, the Exiles jumped above Gas Monkeys into third - which meant a big step up in SRC prize goodies.

1. West London - 1892 laps
2. The Veterans - 1848 laps
3. The Exiles - 1834 laps
4. Gas Monkeys - 1833 laps
5. Team Brumos - 1804 laps
6. The Outsiders - 1681 laps

West London were deservedly on the top step of the podium after a superb drive through all six lanes...

And we were pretty happy at Team Brumos - it was a fun day out 'up north' for us south coasters and we learned so much about driving the Nascot Wood track from Martin. I suspect we'll be back before too long. A big thanks to the Nascot Wood team for organising the race, to SRC for everything they did to support the event - and to everyone who took part and created such a welcoming atmosphere. That synergy between a club, a manufacturer and a friendly group of racers is a great advertisement for our hobby.

Thanks for coming along guys. I wasn't really expecting my team (The Veterans) to do so well. I was one of the few drivers to get sub-10 sec lap, but I think the guys were very consistent in their driving which meant we simply gradually climbed up the leader board.
Glad you enjoyed the day and well done to Mike for winning the "conkers".
