HO Drag Proxy July 2020 RACE REPORT
#41

With the tension mounting before the 23-car Micro Scalextric Street Stock Eliminator, it was time for an exhibition of the new Auto World 'Legends of the Quarter Mile' Pro Stock cars...

These are the first 'Legends' drag cars on the Xtraction chassis and mark fifty years since the birth of Pro Stock as one of the three most prestigious professional drag racing classes. Unlike Top Fuel and Funny Car, Pro Stock runs on pump gas (what we call petrol in the UK). There is more info about the Auto World cars here in the SlotRacer News section. And here are some pics from the strip...

Bill Jenkin's "Grumpy's Toy" Camaro

"Dandy" Dick Landy's Dodge Challenger

Sox & Martin Plymouth Road Runner

The next issue of the South Coast Dragster fanzine will take a closer look at Pro Stock and one of the legends of the class Bob Glidden.

There are two match races to clear up before the main event kicks off...

Doug and David were back with the Chevys. David had won the first round - could Doug level things up?

Yes he could! By 0.056 of a second...

Doug - Chevy Nomad: 0.983 RT / 0.891 ET
David - Stars & Stripes '55 Chevy: 0.982 RT / 0.948 ET

While they were getting ready for a final run, Peter took charge of the DHL Funny Car against Andy. Another close one - a 0.012 second win margin - saw the Burleys win the match 2-0...

Jerome - DHL JR Todd Funny Car: 0.754 RT / 0.874 ET
Andy - Castrol Ashley Force Funny Car: 0.762 RT / 0.878 ET

The Chevys were back on the line for the decider. Youth was victorious by 0.098...

David - Stars & Stripes '55 Chevy: 0.731 RT / 0.864 ET
Doug - Chevy Nomad: 0.733 RT / 0.960 ET

Some great match racing - and more next month. Now we have just one race left. Expect the Street Stock coverage round by round - starting about 8.45pm...

Micro Scalextric Street Stock

Again the FIA Pro ladder was fabulous in sorting out a 23-car field into four rounds and a final. Top qualifier Jane had a bye in the first round and the smaller second half of the ladder would get a bye in the semis. Highlights of round one included...
  • twelfth place qualifier Gareth beaten by thirteenth place Dylan P. Gareth's Aston bogged down big time off the line, giving Dylan a 0.077 win margin to face Jane in round two.
  • Fifteenth place qualifier Andy Player beat Noah by 0.002 of second, the Alfa finally finding some pace.
  • Andy Phillips - sixteenth qualifier - beat David (ninth) by 0.001, despite a much slower reaction time.
  • Doug dispatched Jerome by 0.011 to go through to meet second qualifier Clive.
  • Rebecca had an appalling start, but came back to snatch victory by 0.006 over an unlucky Louise.
Otherwise, the wins were routine, setting up Round Two...
  • Jane beat Dylan P by 0.083, setting a rapid ET of 0.649 - but is she peaking too soon?
  • Terry beats Peter by 0.029, dipping into the 600s at 0.691 to face Jane in Round 3.
  • Alan beats Andy Player by 0.015 - 0.664 to 0.681.
  • Leo beats Andy Phillips by 0.013 with a 0.704.
  • Clive beats Doug by 0.26 with a 0.682 and...
  • Dylan W beats Rebecca by 0.015 with a 0.717
Round three will line up...

Jane vs Terry

Alan vs Leo

Clive vs Dylan

The tension is getting to Rose. She has retired to the hospitality suite to follow the action online...

If any of you find anything unexpected in your return boxes, please be careful - she does bite...

Round Three saw Jane go even quicker - beating Terry by 0.025 seconds despite the WHO regular setting his event best of 0.663. Jane's time was an impressive 0.638 - and that's 0.013 quicker than her top qualifying mark.

Meeting Jane in the Semi Final will be Alan, who beat Leo by 0.020 - Alan hitting 0.658 and Leo going sub-700 at 0.673.

Essentially the other 'Semi' was the race between second qualifier Clive and fifth qualifier Dylan. In a big turn-up Dylan won by 0.011 of a second - 0.675 to 0.685 - Clive holding the lead until Dylan passed him in the final couple of feet...

Who would meet young Dylan - last year's WHO AFX junior champion - in the final?

In an incredibly close race, Jane held off Alan to win by 0.006 of a second - Jane's pace dropping to a 0.644 and Alan improving to 0.654, but it wasn't enough...

We will have another new winner. Will Jane fall at the last? Or can she see off Dylan and end the evening in Victory Lane? We'll find out in a few minutes.

In the meantime, here's the ladder so far...

The Final...

Wow! What a race...

As she had all evening, Jane got a fabulous start. But Dylan's reaction time was quicker: 0.722 to 0.728. On the video, you can see the Veyron gets its nose down first and holds a very small advantage until pulling away a fraction more at the end. The winning margin was 0.012 of a second and the ETs 0.646 to 0.664 - two absolutely cracking times for the big final...

Huge congratulations to Jane on her victory - three great qualifying rounds and four clinical eliminations to win the medal...

All with a hand-me-down car, eh Jeremy?

Tough luck for Dylan, but a great performance after disappointment last month. That Lightning GT is just getting faster and faster.

And that's all the action for this one... However, it might take a bit longer to digest.

Neither is all the coverage done and dusted - there are some championship points to put on a chart and a fanzine to produce. I'll get started on those tomorrow.

Well done Jane a great win Checkeredflag

Another great event Andy full of tension and excitement.  So much so that there may additional entries from ' just outside Bristol' for the next event.

Hopefully Rose has made a full recovery.
