Targa Florio Road Race Proxy - Results

Graham, I’m glad you are continuing with the next proxy.  I use a double wall cardboard moving box that can hold up to 50lbs or 20 kilograms, it’s usually good for 3 full proxies before it’s garbage. Uline only sells them in a group of 10 but definitely worth it if you’re not using one.  My total weight is usually 12lbs or 5-6 kilograms of shipping weight.

Just another suggestion.

Where there is a large / long geographical distance between hosts, we could maybe set up a relay or chain to split the distance into two or three legs.

I really don't trust any of the delivery firms, one of their main problems is they pay peanuts and we know what you get with that.

Your views are always welcome Tony.

Just to clarify the boxes I use are the same type "ie double walled" boxes.

In reality with this proxy I was able to deliver and participate with the Whitchurch & LIverpool rounds (due to attending a live event at the time). And I can see it possible for say Kevin being able to travel halfway to Sunderland for your round. And possibly Sunderland to Nottingham could be managed between us. The issue is going to be, Nottingham to Kent or Abergavenny to Falmouth with no other contacts on route. And then there's Manx Club on Iof Man ? Or even Falmouth to Kent 6-7 hours. so you will have to use delivery services for these rounds

DPD Car damage
So the cars arrived back via Royal Mail today.

Here are photos of the visually damaged cars (although the others will need checking again later)

General impressions

It is clearly obvious from the internal boxes that the box of cars were subject to unreasonable handling. The foamed board internal boxes give a clear indication that the entire box was subject to either a heavy object hitting the box, or the box subjected to extreme pressure from a heavy object. Most of the internal boxes (1-4) showed minor distortion but Box 5 (above) was severe. So all the cars had been subject to some kind of compression, resulting in the most vulnerable (above) being damaged.
And it is clear that the greatest impact or pressure was subjected from the bottom of the box (box 5 was on the lowest layer). As there was a 2cm impact rigid foam layer between the bottom of the outer box and box 5, and the bottom of the box had reinforced tape in place I can't image that normal handing pressure would have caused the box to burst open. There is also remnants of the grey side wall impact rigid impact foam which was used to line the outside walls of the outer box which show distortion or bending.

From the tracking information I have would indicate the damage was caused on the way to or at the local Depot (Leicester), and that the cars were then repacked into their (less robust box) for sending onto Culverstone.

I will now prepare a claim form to be submitted to DPD with this evidence

With this level of mishandling it was clear that we could not continue with the proxy

Good luck with the claim!

Couriers usually turn the blame around, and claim the packaging wasn't sufficient. They have nothing to lose by trying dodge the blame.

I will be pursuing the claim against DPD as I believe the evidence of their neglect of duty of care is irrefutable.

However I am also considering that since there are no official winners, any sponsorship awards which might have otherwise applied should be directed to those effected the most as a gesture of good will.

I am sure the other participants in the proxy would support this.

Additionally one winners award I will uphold is for the "Spirit of the Proxy" which was almost unanimously nominated as the Allard J2 of Grounddhogs.
