Ferrari 250LM
#1

Hi all,
I've decided to break my rule of only building one car at a time.
I want to keep my brain fresh and enthusiastic and not get bogged down on one build, I love building my Fiat and I haven't stopped.
Just want to keep the creative juice's flowing so I've started on this Airfix Ferrari 250LM.

I'd like to try and keep as much of the model as possible so I've decided to build a brass chassis inside.
I have a Racer Sideways BMW M4 white kit to make up and saw the floating chassis and am trying to make a brass sidewinder motor mount that floats similar to that.
I drew up a plan to the wheel base of the model and cut out the brass motor mount.

I thought it'd be easier to drill the axle hole before bending but I soon found out once I got the bushes in, I should of figured a way of drilling afterwards.
I eventually got them soldered in so the axle turns nice and freely, very good learning curve.

A little bit of fettling the motor mount screw holes and she fits nicely.

Next was a thinner brass plate to fix on to the plastic chassis and solder a guide tongue to that.

I found some brass inserts I've had for a long time and thought I could some how use these as the floating part which attaches the motor mount to the rest of the chassis.
They are a little too big so I've done some internet searching and the the smallest I could find which I'd like to use are unfortunately on AliExpress.
So I've bit the bullet and ordered them, they are cheap as anything but I personally would rather buy from the UK.
A Uk company I found wanted £70 compared to £3, yes you read that right. It's crazy Tappingfoot , I just hope I get what I think I'm getting Rofl

She's got a nice stance this lovely little car.

Well I've got a 9 day wait till the inserts hopefully arrive, need to figure out something else to crack on with until then.

Thanks for looking.

Hi All, a little bit of progress.
I was originally going to cut through the wheel arches to be able to slide the front axle tube in.
But I decided to try cutting and soldering a shorter tube to fit the little gap between the wheel arches.
It has worked quite well, so that means I won't weaken the wheel arches.
I've had to cut the back a lot, but I'm going to strengthen that with some solid brass tube I can bend. I'll post pics once done, easier than explaining.

I think I might try and do the strengthening for the back arches next, while I wait for the fixings to come from AliExpress.
Cheers for looking.

Thank you kind sir.

I love everything about these old kits, the box art is stunning and the plastic is quite nice to work with.
Do you still have your first builds Anthony?
