Question Scalextric Land Rover Series 1
#1

The recent Land Rovers from Scalextric/Hornby seem to have an interesting drive-train with both axles driven by spur gears.
Can anyone please share photographs that show the details of this drive-train arrangement?

This sounds like the SCX design.

Opening up this car again (of course I first did this out of curiosity the day it arrived) reminds me this model could become another ‘digitisation’ project.

When the poppy red variant arrives, too, it will then be time for me to digitise both.

Interestingly, by swapping in a standard Scalextric Mabuchi motor the four-wheel drive could be disengaged. Will that make an observable difference? for example when crossing lanes etc? Let’s see.

You could always just remove the pinion on the front axle (or rear ) on the stock motor.

Cheers

Or how about removing one of the connecting axles!

Since this is picking up interest, I wold be interested to know what the overall gear ratio is. Presumably standard Scalextric 9  tooth pinions are fitted, but is the overall ratio their standard 3 to 1 ?
I have just pre-orderd a red one, but in the meantime...

Thanks to all for contributions and thoughts.

After lots of counting of teeth…

pinion gear = 9 teeth
crown gear = 27 teeth

intermediate gear = 27 teeth
drive axle gear = 27 teeth

So yes, the transmission ratio motor-to-wheels is 1:3 (teeth) or 3:1 (rpm).

And, a further yes - removing the intermediate shaft assembly appears to be the easiest way to disengage four-wheel-drive.
