I love the Scalextric Juniors.

I understand that the Austin Allegro and Morris Marina also have their fans.  

To be fair though the 2nd generation models (C72 BRM P57, C73 Porsche 804, C81 Cooper and C82 Lotus 25) were an improvement with better guides/braids and a sorted motor.

Strictly speaking there were only two actual Formula Juniors (C66 Cooper and C67 Lotus) and they are the ones that gave so much trouble, the later ones were F1 cars and catalogued as such. They are perceived as being in the same category because of their construction similarities with the same smaller motor and type of plastic body used.

The other interesting thing about the article is the sheer volume of production, they were sold in their hundreds of thousands! A large production run these days is 5000 and manufacturers can only dream of 60s type sales figures.

had a marina in the 80's 
the sills and chassis were so rotten , the wings would bend outwards if you went above 30 mph 
bit of a danger to pedestrians , on the plus side few ppl tried to overtake on the m/way :)
ahhh those were the days ... until plod pulled me , having no MOT , Insurance , tax and on a 3mth ban , a custodial would have been in order these days , instead £200 fine , car scrapped and an extra 1 mth ban

No amount of persuasion will get you to see the merits of the FJ's

I've somehow managed to acquire half a dozen FJs of various flavours, which I need to do something with. Most of them have wobbly front wheels, apart from a BRM whose wheels are so tight on their stubs that they barely turn. 

I also only have 2, maybe 3, viable motors, so a chassis that can use a modern motor and gears is a very attractive prospect. 

Current plan is to restore 2 or 3 cars as original as possible for sale, and turn the rest into fun little hybrids for my own entertainment by means of more modern parts.

The motor and gears from a modern micro-Scalextric car fit nicely into the FJ chassis. I used sleeves of 3/32 inch outside diameter brass tube over the micro-Scalextric axles so I could fit the original FJ wheels.

I've seen mention of the Micro Scalextric treatment, possibly from yourself. It's an attractive option if a couple of suitable donors come along cheaply. I'm also liking the idea of a 3d printed chassis, allowing a modern motor and gears.

I think I'll see what I can make in the way of standard cars, then decide what to do depending on what I've got left over.

If you are handy, a simple chassis with modern bits, certainly transforms the handling/performance of the FJ's





Or for a touch more performance, a more sophisticated chassis works even better !!.............that said, lots of folks like them (me included) with all their original quirks
