UK HO Drag Proxy Spring Speed Nationals - March 2022

Match Racing - Round 1

All the match racing this time involves AFX 3-Gear cars with an independent front axle. Aurora made a few of these bodies to extend the wheelbase - the front axle is held in mounts on the body shell. The models included a Pinto Funny Car (manufactured 1972-4), Plymouth 'Cuda Funny Car (1971-4), Vega Van Gasser (1971-4) and Corvette Funny Car (1972-4). These were available in various colour schemes and fitted with the original 1971 AFX 'non-magnatraction' chassis.

Bill, Kev and Nico have all sent examples - and they will race each other in three separate matches...

The first race was a very close one - Bill's 'Vette just running out of steam and losing to Kev's 'Cuda by a tiny gap of 0.017 seconds. Their ETs were 0.891 for the 'Vette and 0.883 for the 'Cuda. Kev clocked 6.119 mph through the finish line, Bill 5.682.

Nico's Vega Van is a rocket ship! He ate up the strip in 0.635 seconds, beating Bill's 'Vette by 0.238 seconds. The crowd were left open-mouthed. Nico's speed through the line was 9.358 - Bill was quicker than his first race with 6.524 mph.

The Vega sailed down the strip again - Kev absolutely nowhere. But then Nico 'did a Ken' - the same as last time, a shoe caught a track join... and that was a DNF. The race went to Kev by default - his ET 0.930 and 5.132 mph. To finish first, first you must finish... Nico's car will go to the shop in the morning to repair that shoe and get him back in action for round 2.

A reminder - the Micro track does not like a sharp leading edge with ultra-thin braid. In this case, thicker is better - or a rounded shoe edge Thumbup

Micro Scalextric Super Stock 6.0 Qualifying

This is the final time we'll be running the Micro Scalextric Super Stock cars on their own - from June they'll be joined by other chassis powered by the same AFX 6.0-ohm can motor. I do expect the Micro cars to remain very competitive...

Three identical TQ times for Nico's F40 was quite amazing...

But Rebecca's Nissan is only 0.004 behind, also with three very consistent times. We'll have to wait until Sunday afternoon for the elimination races - should be exciting!

The final action for Saturday night, is the NHRA Top Fuel qualification and eliminators - coming up soon...

NHRA Auto World Top Fuel Qualifying & Eliminators

And a TQ for Clive on his return to action...

Going straight into the eliminators, Clive sat out the first round, leaving it the other four...

It was a close one between Nico and Andy - the margin was 0.015 seconds, with the win going to Nico. Their ETs were 0.790 and 0.796.

Not so close between Rebecca and Iain. Iain's new Top Fueler clocked 0.783 to win by 0.145. Rebecca's ET was 0.915. That put Iain into the final.

Meeting him there would be Clive or Nico...

Nico certainly held his own in this race - but Clive got to the finish line 0.044 seconds ahead. Their ETs were 0.743 and 0.786.

It's a Clive vs Iain final... which is coming next...

The top two qualifiers lined up...

And this is what happened...

Iain got the better start, but Clive's dragster had soon caught and passed the newcomer...

... finishing comfortably ahead...

A fine victory...

And a welcome return to victory circle for Clive...

Here's the ladder...

And all the data...

That's it for tonight... We'll resume in the morning.

You'll have to wait until this evening Jeremy... it's pancake racing this morning. First the NHRA 4-Gears and then the X-Traction Pro Stocks, with some more match racing too.

NHRA 4-Gear Funny Car, Pro Stock & Pro Mod Qualifying

Six very solid 4-Gears warmed up and then qualified...

That's another TQ for Iain...

But I'm sure Nico will be ready to pounce on any hiccups in the eliminators - which are coming up very soon...

NHRA 4-Gear Eliminators

Top and bottom qualifiers met in the first race...

Iain had far too much pace for Andy and the winning margin was a comfortable 0.147 seconds - the ETs 0.741 and 0.870. Iain was straight through to the final

Next, Nico beat Rebecca by 0.098 seconds - 0.786 to 0.867.

The third race - between third and fourth qualifiers - was incredibly close... Bill pulling out a tiny gap to beat Jerome by 0.011 seconds. Their ETs were 0.849 and 0.854.

Bill would meet Nico to see who'd race Iain in the final...

Bill's Chevy got a great start and kept on going - Nico closing on the line, but not enough... Bill won by 0.003 of a second! Their ETs were 0.786 and 0.792. Bill found a decent run just when he needed it, but the crowd certainly weren't expecting that result.

It was third qualifier Bill who lined up against Iain in the final...

And it looked like another shock, with Bill pulling a significant lead in the first half of the strip...

This is what happened...

Iain found plenty of speed in the final third...

Getting across the line 0.058 ahead...

Almost a famous upset for Bill, but it was Iain's Funny Car that made it safely back to Victory Circle...

Here's the 4-Gear ladder...

Plus the data from both qualifying and the elimination rounds...

The 3-Gear Pro Stockers will follow after a tea break...
