Just two BTCC cars this year and both are re-liveries. The first is a third livery on the new-for-2020 BMW 330i M-Sport car and will feature defending champion Colin Turkington’s 2020 BTCC Team BMW livery, complete with the Scalextric logo that was on the car. It seems the new BMW is the Scalextric BTCC to have, showing impressive speed and handling. This third livery on the new car is scheduled for the summer/early autumn.
The second car is Jake Hill’s Honda Civic Type-R, also from the 2020 BTCC season. The Scalextric model has been produced in conjunction with MB Motorsport – a new name for 2020. Former-F1 driver Mark Blundell took charge of the business side, with AmD’s Shaun Hollamby staying on as team principle. The Civic’s livery is unique, commemorating the founding of MB Motorsport in 2020. The car appeared with various title sponsors during the season, so using the MB logo avoided the team putting any of their sponsors’ noses out of joint. The Jake Hill Civic is due for release in the spring.
The new BMW 330i Police car is fitted with working siren and flashing lights and – because of the internal electronics – has blacked-out windows. The BMW 330i patrol cars used by UK police forces are fitted with a 3-litre straight-six engine that delivers 231 bhp and 0-60 acceleration in under six seconds. Expected in the next couple of months.
More new tooling… and it’s the Pagani Huayra BC Roadster – a stylish addition to the Scalextric Super Resistant range. The real Huayra is a low-volume Italian hypercar and the BC is a modified track-focused version – twenty were manufactured and sold instantly at £2 million each. Although the Scalextric car is Super Resistant, it looks to have plenty of detail. The Scalextric Huayra model has an inline mounted short-can motor and is Digital Plug Ready. Lights are not fitted in these Super Resistant cars and the windows are blacked-out.
Three versions of the BC Roadster will be released in 2021: a red car in the Street Cruisers set, a yellow solo car (both available in the summer), plus a mouth-watering Drago Viola Edition - from the racing game CSR2 - available at the end of the year.
Also in the Super Resistant range is Scalextric’s own hypercar, the Rasio R-20. A new yellow version of the Rasio will appear in the entry-level Street Cruisers set and a new red solo car will be available anytime soon. Like the Huayra, the Rasio is an ideal car for younger racers.
Before we move on to the final intriguing new releases in the catalogue, I’ll take a quick look at additions to the 1:64 scale Micro and My First Scalextric range…
After two very busy years introducing their new 1:64 system, Scalextric have focused on just two extra track pieces and two new sets this year. Available in the spring as a pocket-money accessory pack, the Lap Counter is what we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a standard mechanical lap counter, but also features a ‘Booby Trap’ finale to the race – when the race is won, the loser is catapulted off the track.
The new lap counter is included in two new sets – Batman vs The Riddler and James Bond 007 – along with a new track piece that is a ‘down ramp’, that creates a humpback bridge (or elevated sections) along with the ‘up ramp’ that is already available.
The new 007 set features new tooling for a 1:64 scale Vantage V8 and is accompanied by the original DB5 – BMT216A.
The new Batman set has the previously-released Batman car alongside a Riddler car – which is a very cool re-livery on the Sci-Fi supercar body. Both sets are battery-powered (a UK mains powerbase and power supply is available as an accessory pack) and will be released in the summer / early autumn.
