Triple Crown - American Road Race Slot Car Proxy Tour
#61

Just a small update, the cars have been checked over and generally seem fine.  There are some absolute beauties in there which I'm looking forward to seeing go around the club track. There were a couple of observations:

Scott Sports Racing's Class A DB9 has quite a bit of side to side movement in the rear axle. I'm assuming the spur gear has somehow shifted over towards the wheel creating the room for the excessive play. I'm happy to adjust this back (it's easily accessible without removing the body), or I can leave it be.

Harrisons Racers Class C Camaro has a build up of rubber debris lodged in the teeth of the spur gear. I will brush this out, but it will likely build up again as I think the pinion may be chewing on the chunky soft rubber tyre when it's loaded on corners.

Rokers Roar's Class D Chevy Monte Carlo - the rear axle feels a bit stiff; it may be that the gear mesh is a bit tight or something else in going on.  I'll see how this develops once the car is run.

Many (in fact nearly all) cars braids seemed a bit bent/curled up at the ends. I think during transport the are rubbing and snagging on the foam liner in the box.  When they are repacked I shall put a small sheet of paper beneath each car which will hopefully prevent this from worsening.

If all goes to plan we should be running the cars this evening (a day earlier than originally planned). I had hoped to livestream some of the action but there is no internet at the club venue and it may prove too much to stream from my phone.  Needless to say, I will record as much footage as possible and upload and share it as soon as I can

I found the same thing with the curled up braids on arrival and I definitely straightened all of them before packing and onward transit so I think you are right about them snagging on the foam.

A couple of the sidewinder cars have cut it really fine on tyre diameter and I would not be  surprised if they are running on the gear rather than the rubber by the end of the series.

I'll have to keep this brief as I've got to head off for work in a bit - full race report to come later.  But for now:

Last night Viking SCC hosted the third round of the Road Race Proxy.  We ran two cars at a time for 10 laps then swapped cars and ran another 10 laps.  That way each car wasn't relying on a single drivers style/ability.  The two times were added to give a total accumulative race time.  The secondary measurement was fastest lap from the sessions. Car were run in reverse points order.

Class A:

Bit embarrassing when your own car comes out on top; but it was built and tuned on this track so makes sense. The battle between myself and Brumos' Ninco's was quite a close one (3 thousandths of a second separate the fastest lap times!)

So, like I said, I had hoped to livestream last night but the wifi gods wouldn't allow it.  I have video footage from the various rounds which I will cobble together and upload as soon as I can. But for now, here is the feedback from the night of racing last night. These are just observations and in no way criticisms.  I genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to drive every one of these cars and experience the unique traits of each one so thank you to all of the entrants:

Class A:
Team RNLI – La Ferrari: It’s a Carrera, which means it’s quite heavy, the motor struggles with acceleration and braking at 12v, and its difficult to find replacement tyres that fit well. Fairly planted, just underpowered for the weight.

Scott Sports Racing – Aston Martin DB9: Nothing particularly wrong with this car, just lacks the punch and grip of some of it’s rivals.

Team Cube – Ford GT & Team Tatters Mercedes AMG: I discussed these two together as they are perfect running mates.  These were so much fun to go head to head with as there was very little between them.  After 20 laps with two different drivers, these cars were separated by 1/10th of a second!

Courtney Sport – Porsche 911 RSR: Surprise result here. This car is fast, smooth and has tons of grip on the bends.  I think it missed out as Viking circuit is a very punchy track with lots of short accelerating sections.  Although this car has it on top speed and cornering, in the short burst sections, it lacked the grunt of its long can motor’d competitors.

Ruscillo Racing – Renault Megane:  Another surprise as this is clearly a fast car.  Toward the end of its first run it developed a slight stutter in certain sections of track. It has extremely long braids and I think these were shorting on something or losing connection somewhere. These were fettled for the second run which was enough to give it the fastest overall lap time in this class; but even after this, it lacked the consistency of the top placed two Ninco’s.

Brumos RSR – Porsche 997 & Green Star Racing – Lamborghini Gallado: Again, these made great running mates. I’d say that the Porsche felt like it was getting faster and faster as the event went on and confidence grew with its handling characteristics. But at the end of the day the Lambo was built to run on this track, plus I think it was a case of the Slot-It P6 tyres being marginally better on this surface than the NSR’s that contributed to the final result… just… by less than a second!

Class B:

Loosesalute – Ford Crestliner & Rokers Roar – Cadillac 62:  What can I say. Thank you so much for sending these in.  This pair were just so much fun to waft about the track.  They are slow, heavy, and a real challenge to get around the corners; and I loved every second of driving these. Other club members were also in awe and filled with nostalgia watching these barges sail their way around. The Cadillac has the edge, I don’t know if this is down to the fact it has more body rock or something else. Either way, great work, both of you!

Scott Sport – Escort Mk1: This car is fun and has a real stock-car racer vibe to it! The huge rear crown gear drags on the track though and the front wheels bind on the body slightly which hampers its performance.

Scuderia Turini – Mercedes 250SL: Very pretty car and crazy fast, a little too fast for the level of grip it possesses. Goes around the track like nervous whippet.

Mountain View – Ferrari 166: Stunning beautiful car, and great performance to match. Only let down by the guide only half engaging in the slot which limits confidence around the bends.

ALS Racing – Corvette C1: Very smooth and a good performer. I’d imagine this would be very successful around a long sweeping wood track. Lacked the punch in some of the point and squirt sections.

Roadrunners – Corvette Pan American: Truly amazing car. Smooth, fast and great to look at. This car had everyone in the room contemplating whether we should be running a tuned classic class at the club.  An absolute highlight to drive.

Bangers Racing – AC Cobra: The results speak for themselves. Effortless to consistently drive quickly.  Great build.
