Goodwood Revival Proxy - Official Results & Reports
#31

Round 1 of the Goodwood Proxy has been run at Viking SCC.  The track is a 6 Lane Policar club track running at 12v with lap timing using Slotmaster software.  Both drivers used Truspeed BP2 controllers.  The cars were run in green and black lanes (Lanes 2 & 5) allowing sufficient space between them and no significant advantage with corner radius'.

Event 1:

Brumos' Porsche 904 was certainly the star of the class.  It handled beautifully, was smooth and well balanced giving a well deserved first place.

There was absolutely nothing between 2nd and 3rd of Modsports Corvette and Roadrunners Ferrari GTO. Both rounds these cars ran side by side from start to finish; both ending up with the same total race distance.  So position was ultimately decided by fastest lap.  We used a combined average fastest lap from both lanes which put the Corvette in second over the Ferrari by 0.02 seconds.

BARacer's Ferrari was fast, but lacked the grip to keep under control.  Bonus cool points from me for the lights though!

OXO's Ferrari lapped well, but didn't quite have the overall pace

Batmanx's Porsche was fun to drive, but it lacked in straight line speed and Makem's Costin Jaguar got a bit squirrelly when pushed.

All cars in this class were really enjoyable to drive

Event 2:

Star of the show should have again been Brumos, this time with his Camaro.  This car was incredibly fast and smooth, but it lacked brakes (something we've found with the Predator motor around here) which caught out both drivers at the end of the straight.  That said, I wouldn't change anything about this car, despite two offs it nearly made it back to first, and had the race time been 20 seconds longer I have no doubt that it would be on the top step.  Not to detract from LeManx's Jaguar XJ12.  This car is well balanced and a joy to drive and worthy of its first place.

Bangers Racing's Rover was also a delight to throw around the track, nice and controlled.

Batmanx's Camaro took all of us by surprise.  I don't think anyone was expecting that kind of pace from that, especially with it's stock chassis (I'd love to know your weight placement on that) so well done with that one.

Paul C's Alfa GTV was (if you excuse the pun) on rails.  It was fantastic through the bends.  My only criticism is that the gear mesh seems quite tight which I think is seriously hurting the straight line speed.  To put it into perspective look at the below photo:

That's the positions the cars rolled to a stop after they passed the gantry at the end of the race.  The Alfa stopped almost instantly.  This also highlights how free running the predator motors are as you can see the finishing position of Batmanx's Camaro!  For reference, the average slot it group c will roll to about mid-bend.

The Ford Capri of Team Cube also cornered very well and had a real cat and mouse race with Ruscillo's Camaro, with the Capri getting ahead in the corners, only for the Camaro to come back past on the straight with its great straight line speed.  That's a questionable wheel choice for a Capri though...

The Camaro of ALS is definitely not where it should be in the standings.  The car slowed over the course of the races which was found to be due to the whole rear axle slipping on the crown gear causing the tyre to rub on the body.  This was re-centered, but the grub screw on the crown gear is slightly rounded and not engaging tightly (which likely led to the slip).  I haven't yet checked to see if it's the grub screw head or the thread that is rounded.  There is a stopper on one side of the gear but not the other, a stopper both sides could be another option.

Finally Makem's little Dolomite.  This handled surprisingly well for a small tall car.  Again, the gear mesh seemed quite tight which I think hurt it's ultimate pace

Finally Event 3:

Not much separating the top 3.  The Chaparral of Sam D is quick, but has a tendency to tip at the limit (even after it jettisoned its rear wing).  By contrast the Ferrari of Roadrunners and the GT40 of LeManx were both smooth and very easy to drive.

Modsports GT40 MKIV is smooth but very heavy which dulls its punch a little.

Ruscillo's Ford GT40 and ALS' McLaren are both easy to drive but lack the overall pace of the top 3.

Bangers Ford P68 seemed uncharacteristically off pace as his cars tend to fly around here.  Investigation after showed that one tyre is rubbing (albeit lightly) on the redundant motor shaft.  The other tyre is also contacting the pinion and the body.  I guess this could be resolved by cutting the redundant motor shaft off one side, and pushing the pinion on further on the other.  From what I can see, the rear wheel is already as close as it can get to the spur gear, so the only way to limit the tyre on the body will be to reduce body and/or pod float, or to shave the tyre a little.  Either way, I'm leaving it for now until I'm told otherwise...

BARacer's Ferrari was quite light on grip which hindered his performance here and Lifeboats Lotus lacked the grip and punch of the others.

Then there's MikeB's Chaparral.  This started with very little grip and seemed to lose what it had over the course of the race distance.  With some different rear tyres this could be more competitive

Ade,
I wouldn't worry about it. The tyres have possibly swelled a bit as the oil has soaked into them. They'll probably wear down, with use.

Cheers Chris

Congratulations LeManx, Modsport and Roadrunners on your performances. AdeC, thank you and your team for the run and getting the most out of the Brumos RSR team.  Good luck to all the builders moving forward.

Unfortunately no. I had two cars started but life/work etc got in the way and I wasn’t going to get them finished in time.

That's a shame, you've had good results in recent ones.
