What's in the 2021 Scalextric catalogue?
#31

Just two BTCC cars this year and both are re-liveries. The first is a third livery on the new-for-2020 BMW 330i M-Sport car and will feature defending champion Colin Turkington’s 2020 BTCC Team BMW livery, complete with the Scalextric logo that was on the car. It seems the new BMW is the Scalextric BTCC to have, showing impressive speed and handling. This third livery on the new car is scheduled for the summer/early autumn.

The second car is Jake Hill’s Honda Civic Type-R, also from the 2020 BTCC season. The Scalextric model has been produced in conjunction with MB Motorsport – a new name for 2020. Former-F1 driver Mark Blundell took charge of the business side, with AmD’s Shaun Hollamby staying on as team principle. The Civic’s livery is unique, commemorating the founding of MB Motorsport in 2020. The car appeared with various title sponsors during the season, so using the MB logo avoided the team putting any of their sponsors’ noses out of joint. The Jake Hill Civic is due for release in the spring.

The new BMW 330i Police car is fitted with working siren and flashing lights and – because of the internal electronics – has blacked-out windows. The BMW 330i patrol cars used by UK police forces are fitted with a 3-litre straight-six engine that delivers 231 bhp and 0-60 acceleration in under six seconds. Expected in the next couple of months.

More new tooling… and it’s the Pagani Huayra BC Roadster – a stylish addition to the Scalextric Super Resistant range. The real Huayra is a low-volume Italian hypercar and the BC is a modified track-focused version – twenty were manufactured and sold instantly at £2 million each. Although the Scalextric car is Super Resistant, it looks to have plenty of detail. The Scalextric Huayra model has an inline mounted short-can motor and is Digital Plug Ready. Lights are not fitted in these Super Resistant cars and the windows are blacked-out.

Three versions of the BC Roadster will be released in 2021: a red car in the Street Cruisers set, a yellow solo car (both available in the summer), plus a mouth-watering Drago Viola Edition - from the racing game CSR2 - available at the end of the year.

Also in the Super Resistant range is Scalextric’s own hypercar, the Rasio R-20. A new yellow version of the Rasio will appear in the entry-level Street Cruisers set and a new red solo car will be available anytime soon. Like the Huayra, the Rasio is an ideal car for younger racers.

Before we move on to the final intriguing new releases in the catalogue, I’ll take a quick look at additions to the 1:64 scale Micro and My First Scalextric range…

After two very busy years introducing their new 1:64 system, Scalextric have focused on just two extra track pieces and two new sets this year. Available in the spring as a pocket-money accessory pack, the Lap Counter is what we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a standard mechanical lap counter, but also features a ‘Booby Trap’ finale to the race – when the race is won, the loser is catapulted off the track.

The new lap counter is included in two new sets – Batman vs The Riddler and James Bond 007 – along with a new track piece that is a ‘down ramp’, that creates a humpback bridge (or elevated sections) along with the ‘up ramp’ that is already available.

The new 007 set features new tooling for a 1:64 scale Vantage V8 and is accompanied by the original DB5 – BMT216A.

The new Batman set has the previously-released Batman car alongside a Riddler car – which is a very cool re-livery on the Sci-Fi supercar body. Both sets are battery-powered (a UK mains powerbase and power supply is available as an accessory pack) and will be released in the summer / early autumn.

Finally, we get to Formula E…

Scalextric have signed a global deal to produce Formula E slot cars and sets. Both brands are family-orientated and it’s easy to see why Scalextric would be attracted by Formula E’s fun and innovative format - especially all the interactive, arcade-like elements. Using a racing-oriented evolution of the Spark Plug app, Scalextric are attempting to emulate the atmosphere and borrow some of the features of Formula E in the new World Championship set.

The cars are robust replicas of the 2019-20 Spark Gen2 electric racers that Formula E fans will instantly recognise. The set has a gold DS Techeetah and a blue and black Jaguar. Available separately will be DS Techeetah of 2019-20 champion António Félix da Costa, plus the 2021 Mahindra of Alexander Sims. All four are standard Scalextric analogue cars, fitted with the F1 slim-can motor and magnatraction. They are also Digital Plug Ready (DPR), taking the smaller C8516 F1 Digital Plug.

The Formula E set is a standard Scalextric analogue set, but has two Spark Plug dongles rather than traditional hand controllers. Each dongle connects by Bluetooth to a compatible smart device (phone or tablet), which acts as a wireless controller via the Spark Plug app. I've reviewed Spark Plug at SlotRacer here.

The current Spark Plug app will continue, with a separate app having all the Formula E features. The new app allows two teams – of up to six people each – to participate in the race. Each team has a driver, plus up to five non-driving team members who have their own collective and individual tasks to perform in the race – pit stops, strategy, fan boost and attack mode.

An average race lasts eight to nine minutes and has these features...
  • Pit stops – at least two per race. The pit crew carry out a tyre change and battery recharge. The app gives a warning and then stops the car on the track. An in-app ‘mini-game’ appears in pit crew’s app. Speed is of the essence to jack up the car, change wheels, recharge the battery etc. Each team member can work on a different task. Once completed, the car is released back to the driver.
  • If a driver crashes more than a set number of times, an extra pit stop is triggered. The pit crew get a view of car to diagnose and fix any damage as quickly as they can.
  • Fan boost – one per race, controlled by pit crew.
  • Attack mode – the opponent’s car gets an unexpected boost that might cause a crash.
  • Speed restrict – intermittent power on the opponent’s car to give a ‘kangaroo’ effect.
Fans of Formula E will see how some familiar features have been changed or tweaked to add to the Scalextric gameplay. Also, pit stops aren’t routine in a real Formula E race any more, but in the Scalextric app, they play an exciting, collaborative role.

I am a fan of the current Spark Plug app and am delighted to see an alternative motorsport-themed version. I love how Spark Plug adds in arcade-style features to analogue racing – in a different and more interactive way than the ARC app and ARC Air. I can’t wait to try it! The Formula E set and individual cars are expected in the summer / early autumn.

That’s it for what’s in the catalogue – I think... I did miss a couple last year Sweating

This is my tally of new tooling…

  1. Batmobile 1966
  2. Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 – racing and road versions
  3. Corvette C8R
  4. Formula E Spark Gen2
  5. Jaguar XJS – racing and police versions
  6. KITT
  7. Lotus 97T Renault
  8. Lotus 99T Honda
  9. Lotus Esprit S1 / Lotus Esprit S2
  10. Mercedes AMG GT3 Evo
  11. Pagani Huayra BC Roadster
  12. Plymouth Barracuda / Chrysler Hemicuda – two racing versions
  13. Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0 – GT and Trans-Am racing versions
Micro New Tooling
  1. Aston Martin V8 (set only)
  2. Lap Counter track piece (set and separate accessory)
  3. Hump bridge track piece (set only)
Did I miss any?

As for what’s not in the catalogue, I did ask about the lack of rally cars. As the Scalextric team have said before, their bosses need sure-fire sellers at the moment - and rally hasn’t performed well-enough in the past. However, last autumn’s rally-cross Sierra seems to be doing okay, which is useful ammunition. I also know the Scalextric team keep an eye on Facebook forums - and second-hand rally cars have certainly been in demand during 2020. Every car is planned at least 18 months in advance, so there can be a big lag between a decision being made and the car appearing in the catalogue. I got the impression that there will be rally cars in the future. No promises, but…

I hope you’ve enjoyed the coverage today. As more images are available, you can rest assured that I’ll be posting them in the News section here on SlotRacer Online – along with any extra info and gossip I can glean.

Well, I'll give the Margate boys this -- a good chunk of my slot budget will be going to Scaley this year!!

Looking forward to the new toolings - the AMG and Vette!!  The Ford GT as well.  --- I think the 3D chassis designers will be busy!!
