Future Proxy Series - questionaire
#21

To some, 'scratch built' means built from scratch i.e. home made chassis or car bodyshell.  In days gone by that meant brass chassis and wood carved or fibreglass molded bodyshells.

To some, painting a white kit isn't 'scratch built'.

To me personally, 'scratch built' means you've made some part of the car yourself or clearly modified a standard part to suit a different car.

Yes I agree in principal, but I think you have to be realistic in terms of a "modern" interpretation as apposed to historic one. So I would not compel all the entrants to make a brass & wire chassis or make a body out of Balsa wood.....although that might be interesting challenge. And 3d printing of body and chassis are a common feature of modern slot racing, so I don't think you could exclude them although you might restrict it to the use of certain 3d materials or in the case of the motor mounts for the reason given above.

But I don't see much difference between buying a GTM kit and calling it a Scratch build compared to a Slot it white kit and calling it scratch build, effectively the modelling activities are are the same just different materials.

This is a photo of the entrants cars from the 2018 Scratch build proxy

David tells me that he intended to follow up with GP & Touring cars proxies of the same type, but life got in the way.
This makes me think that perhaps it should be a one shot exersize, as you never know whats around the corner.

  • A scratch build proxy would be very cool…. My thoughts are keep it simple as chassis building is not something everyone can do nor want to do.
  •   An Area71 car as an example I would consider scratch built regardless of chassis.
  •  I’m comfortable with an 18k motor limit as I’ve sent 3 cars to Graham over the years that have returned in one piece.
  • I would ask to consider a 1.5mm ground clearance and or 8mm tire to enhance handling and potentially keep narrow car flips and marshaling to a minimum.
  • Allow A71 cars to use a brass or steel chassis as they have shown not to run away with proxies.  I have an A71 Ferrari Lusso and SWB that would be great for this proxy.

having reminded myself of the Question:
"An additional New scratchbuild class based on (George Turner or similar Resin or 3d printed kits)

I believe that most the repondents would have understood this to be based on kits as described, perhaps with some modifications to the chassis allowed as such.

Probably the word "Scratchbuild " was a misnomer in this context, and the word probably should have been left out the question, however at the time I did not expect such a strong favourable response.

So I think the Proxy should be based on the type of commercial kits as described, and probably not all encompassing......is my thought

You could call it a 'Builders type proxy'.

Is that max width for the bodyshell or across the tyre walls?

This time for the sports /GT, Saloons it is Body shell width that is specified, but there will be a written requirement that the tyre wall width must be be no greater than the body width. For the GP cars it is the tyre wall width.

I have widened the scope of the proxy to include RTR cars, as I think something else maybe happening in regard to a "Scratch build" type proxy on facebook (if I read the runes correctly). So I will keep the theme the same as I originally proposed but with less bias towards the modelling side, although there will be the usual Concours Award or in this case perhaps Awards for each Event depending on the entries we might receive.

I have settled on Max 18k rpm motors as I think it offers a wider available choice, but I think we might ask the participating tracks to run at 10volts to keep these cars in the slot as much as possible.
