The Racer Sideways Nissan Skyline Turbo is another addition to the very popular and competitive Sideways Group 5 grid. Sideways announced the arrival of the first cars at its HQ in France last week and some have reached retailers on mainland Europe in the past couple of days. With any luck, Gaugemaster's distribution operation will get some Skylines to UK retailers before too long. These things are taking a little longer than usual these days, but it's great to see brand new models hitting the market place.

       

The Skyline was a beast of a car, developed by Nissan for the Japanese Super Silhouette Series that ran between 1979 and 1984, with cars built to Group 5 regulations. Powered by a 570 horsepower 2-litre turbocharged engine, the Skyline scored two wins in its 1982 debut season and five wins in 1983. The series was dissolved into the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship for 1984, with the Skyline having appeared at two JSPC races in 1983.

One appearance for the Skyline outside of Japan was the 1982 Kyalami 9 hours, a non-championship race that featured Group C, Group 6 and Group 5 cars mostly from Europe and plenty of local Group 1 touring cars. The Hasemi Motorsport Skyline was driven by David Hobbs, Tony Pond and regular driver Masahiro Hasemi - the car qualified tenth and failed to finish...

   

The Sideways car is a very faithful representation of the Kyalami Skyline. To model the car run in Japanese Super Silhouette and JSPC races, there will need to be a different headlight arrangement and rear wing struts. These may well be found in the white kit, that has also been listed by Sideways as arrived in France...
