Could not resist these when I saw them at a very low price. 

Battery boxes for a Marx  raceway, and they are styled to look like vintage lead-acid car batteries. I got a red one and a blue one, both in excellent cosmetic state. The red unit control lever has de-hinged but the blue unit worked straight out of the box.  As well as having the styled top the sides represent a building.

The control is a simple resistor wire wound round a former and with a wiper that swings in an arc. There is no spring-return so the lever can be set and left in place. No brake contact of course.  The yellow bits cover the rivets holding the battery contacts in place. 

Box is designed to hold three D size cells offering 4.5 volts. Resistor value is about eleven ohms, the standard set up was just enough to get a Hornby MINI running in a controlled manner (needed a push to get going though!). 

The boxes came with four sections of track including the power-base. The wire connections are fabulous - much like loudspeaker connectors where one pushes down a lever to open the receptacle and then pushes in the bared wire end.
