You will need to make sure that the track surface and rails all meet up neatly so that there is no bump. If the rails do not match up smoothly the car braids will get damaged. That is why the Scalextric track has the "pegs" to join from one piece to the next.
Routed tracks generally have dowel rods inserted to align the boards when pushed together.
