What about including those of us who made our own chassis, there's at least as much work involved there. There's tens of hours of work gone into some of those cars that aren't made by a major manufacturer.

No, there is only a few B&W chassis cars and they are in this list anyway.

I think the “Spirit Award”, should not be about qualifying times or race position. It is a combination of Best Presented, feedback on running experience ( how enjoyable they were to run ) additional photos from the tracks and videos etc.
