And finally the
Pitlane Review
The issue of the guides once again reared its head, I though I had done everything possible to ensure that all the entrants would fit the appropriate guides which would work on the shallow Classic Scalextric and SCX tracks. And as Woodcote said these are still fairly commonly used in Rally slot car events, even the Rally Club in Abergavenny still has some SCX and Classic Scalextric track embedded in some of their Stages. So it is a feature of this type of proxy event where these tracks are needed to make up sufficient number of stages and Rounds as many hosts do not have permanent fixed wood based Rally tracks.
So having failed in my attempt to use a persuasive approach, probably it would have been best to have used a mandatory requirement to use specified guides from NSR, Avant or Ninco. Although I am not planning another similar event in this Proxy series, it is something I think maybe necessary if we were looking any further ahead....
Event 1 (Monte Carlo)
So at last we saw 3 Jaguars on the Podium, very pleased to see RoadRunners in line version just ahead of the 2 sidewinders
The Austin Healey of Green Star Racing which did so well on the last Round, falling foul of the shallow track guide slot as the others did. But it was great to see that the Landcrab of Novissime Iterum gave a respectable account of itself, I think a clever bit of photography by our host illustrated the 2 wheel cornering effect.....or was it real.
Event 2 (Rally Class B Cars)
Most of these car made it around the track in "donkey fashion" or was it the slippery track surface making them struggle, but we ended up with Woodcotes Porsche 911SC taking the top spot on the podium, Bangers Racing's Metro 6R4 having to settle for 2nd place and the Lancia 037 of Harrisons Racers in 3rd.
Another fairly miserable Round for Brumos RSR and Courtney Sport....perhaps better luck next time.
Event 3 ( Rally Legends)
Well the RoadRunners Fiat 131 Abarth is still there at the top, keeping the Porsche 914/6's at bay, not sure for how much longer .......probably not long at all.
So this time it was the Porsche 914/6 of Savage GT chasing my tail, and a rare appearance of the Triumph TR7 of SSRC coming home in 3rd.
In general a good Round for the TR7's Triumph over the Porsches I think
Event 4 (WRC Modern)
Much better predictable run for the Ninco cars, must have lifted BARacers's spirits at the end.
The 1st Place Subaru of Woodcote Racing in its element on these difficult tracks, with Ruscillo Racings Citroen C4 2nd and Scott Sports Renault Clio back on the podium again for 3rd.
Overall Positions
Events
All over the place at the moment , with a battle of the Jaguars in the Monte Carlo Event.
Bangers Racing Metro 6R4 just about keeping its head above water.
RoadRunners Fiat 131 Abarth wondering what happened to the Porsches
Woodcotes Subaru keeping ahead of the rest of the field.
Car Classes
Class A -Team Alaric's Subaru almost sharing the leading position with Scott Sports Renault Clio
Class B - Woodcote's Ninco Subaru just nipped ahead of the RoadRunners Fiat 13 Abarth.
Class C - The Porsche 914/6 of Savage GT having been about the only car not to have suffered too much on the last Round is now leading the class.
Team Points
Team Savage GT lost out with the BMW M1 this time allowing Bangers Racing to reach the top of the table.
RoadRunners happily in 2nd place.
Harrisons Racers making into 3rd.
New appearances in the top10 are
Ruscillo Racing =7th
SSRC =10th
Team Alaric still hanging on in joint 10th place with their lone Subaru car
So we are going a little further North to Woking to catch up with next host curtesy of DPD.... I hope

So I think a recommendation is fair enough personally.
I did rush my entries in and didn't have time to test on those surfaces, I expected it would come back and bite me, and it has !

So, although it didn't sound much fun for BARacer, as a neutral observer and huge classic rally fan, I'd say Friston Forest did exactly what at least one track in any rally series should do, which is to act as an antidote to the smooth wooden tracks which will always favour the "tarmac" rally cars, and hand back the advantage to the proper rally cars which should be more versatile under a wide range of different conditions.
It's like the old Stratos v Escort battle. On tarmac, in the sun, the Stratos would inevitably win. But in Britain, with the rain, and snow and gravel surfaces, it never managed to win the RAC Rally. In rallying outright pace is, or should be just one ingredient.
It's shaping up nicely, and I'm sure those that were brutally punished in Friston Forest will make up ground else where, and that's how it should be in my opinion.

You won't believe how much work it was to get a sidewinder in a plastic pod and chassis (brass & wire is much easier), a spur gear and a pair of 8mm tyres inside 54mm....the spur gear hub was cut back to halfway through the grub screw hole so the only way to get the gear to stay on the axle was solder it on! An idea I hadn't tried until this car, tin the axle where the gear will sit, slide the spur gear up to the solder, reheat solder and slide the spur gear on whilst the solder is molten...it's never coming off and I actually like it
...so did Andy who now does the same thing
I've built many cars and for Slot Rally, the narrower cars definitely go better with an inline big motor but built this particular car as a design exercise purely for the heck of it, it's the first time I've built such a narrow sidewinder.
If I were to start the Jag again it would be inline with a boxer motor which would leave ample room for full width tyres instead of having to cut them undersize like I had to.

Please remember that before 'proper' Rally cars started appearing in the late 70's (Stratos) we had family saloons and small sports cars, the likes of which we are seeing in the Classic Monte Carlo class that only ran on roads.

On a sympathetic tone, I do appreciate that some of our regular Proxy entrants would have never seen or raced on these earlier Scalextric or SCX tracks. Whereas seasoned Rally slot racers will instinctively be fitting shallow profile Rally Guides. So jamming of guides in the tracks would not be expected to occur.
So perhaps the case for a mandatory requirement to fit an approved guide is necessary in future.

I am not holding my breath or putting up any hard currency on the RoadRunners Jaguar, I would fancy the brass chassis version to win out by the end but I am enjoying the moment
