I simply cheated, and purchased  a  Bugler pin striping tool 

Took a while to find one on eBay at a sensible price, but perfect for the job.  Needed a bit of patience at first, but soon got the hang of it.

For my track, I painted thick white lines all around the edges, then used 3mm tape over that, and then repainted in Grey.

I have always felt that my chosen period of racing - 60s and 70s - the tracks were NOT perfect and thus I did not go for perfection. There are small inperfections in the striping, but for me that is closer to reality.
