Match Racing - Round 1
All the match racing this time involves AFX 3-Gear cars with an independent front axle. Aurora made a few of these bodies to extend the wheelbase - the front axle is held in mounts on the body shell. The models included a Pinto Funny Car (manufactured 1972-4), Plymouth 'Cuda Funny Car (1971-4), Vega Van Gasser (1971-4) and Corvette Funny Car (1972-4). These were available in various colour schemes and fitted with the original 1971 AFX 'non-magnatraction' chassis.
Bill, Kev and Nico have all sent examples - and they will race each other in three separate matches...
The first race was a very close one - Bill's 'Vette just running out of steam and losing to Kev's 'Cuda by a tiny gap of 0.017 seconds. Their ETs were 0.891 for the 'Vette and 0.883 for the 'Cuda. Kev clocked 6.119 mph through the finish line, Bill 5.682.
Nico's Vega Van is a rocket ship! He ate up the strip in 0.635 seconds, beating Bill's 'Vette by 0.238 seconds. The crowd were left open-mouthed. Nico's speed through the line was 9.358 - Bill was quicker than his first race with 6.524 mph.
The Vega sailed down the strip again - Kev absolutely nowhere. But then Nico 'did a Ken' - the same as last time, a shoe caught a track join... and that was a DNF. The race went to Kev by default - his ET 0.930 and 5.132 mph. To finish first, first you must finish... Nico's car will go to the shop in the morning to repair that shoe and get him back in action for round 2.
A reminder - the Micro track does not like a sharp leading edge with ultra-thin braid. In this case, thicker is better - or a rounded shoe edge
