Female racing drivers.

Shirley Muldowney, Sabine Schmitz, Pat Moss and Michelle Mouton
  • This week we take a look at female racing drivers, some you may have heard of, and some you may not. Either way, these ladies have confounded expectations by not just competing on equal terms with the men, but winning.
  • Michèle Mouton Michèle Mouton won the two-litre prototype class in the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans, she won the 1978 Tour de France Automobile, she took three victories in the 1982 World Rally Championship to finish runner up, and she won the 1985 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
  • Eliška Junková Eliška Junková-Khásová, also known as Elisabeth Junek was the first woman to win a Grand Prix event, and performed admirably at the 1928 Targa Florio, where in spite of a puncture she still finished fifth.
  • Shirley Muldowney Shirley Muldowney was known as the “First Lady of Drag Racing”. She was the first woman to receive a license from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to drive a Top Fuel dragster. She won the NHRA Top Fuel championship in 1977, 1980, and 1982, and won a total of 18 NHRA national events.
  • Jutta Kleinschmidt Jutta Kleinschmidt is best known for her many appearances in the Dakar Rally. In 1997 she became the first woman to win a stage of the event, the following year, she was on the podium and, in 2001, she became the first woman to win the Rally.
  • Danica Patrick Danica Patrick is the most successful woman in the history of American open-wheel car racing, her victory in the 2008 Indy Japan 300 is the only win by a woman in an IndyCar Series race.
  • Desiré Wilson Desiré Randall Wilson is one of only five women to have competed in F1, and the only woman to win an F1 race of any kind when she won at Brands Hatch in the British Aurora F1 Championship in 1980. She also won both the Monza 1000km and the Silverstone 6 Hours becoming the first female to have outright victories in any FIA World Championship race.
  • Of course, those are but a few of the talented women drivers, and we shouldn’t leave this section without honourable mentions for the following…
    • Maria Teresa de Filippis, an early pioneer and the first woman to qualify for an F1 race.
    • Lella Lombardi, the only female F1 driver in history to have a top six finish.
    • Pat Moss who took three outright wins and seven podium finishes in international rallies.
    • Janet Guthrie, who took two class wins in the 12hrs of Sebring and was the first woman to race at Indianapolis and Daytona.
    • Sabine Schmitz who took two wins at the Nürburgring 24hrs.
    • Nettan Lindgren-Jansson, the only female driver to take a class win in the British Touring Car Championship.
    • And of course Ewy Rosqvist who won every stage of the gruelling 1962 Argentine Grand Prix.

The Movies

Lola T70 police car from THX 1138
  • Lola T70 Police Car Did you know that the police drove Lola T70s in George Lucas’s first film? Of course Lamborghini Gallardos and Porsche 356s have been used in law enforcement roles, but the Star Wars creator put a light bar and siren on a genuine Lola T70 in his directorial debut, THX 1138.

Gary Johnson's Ford Mk1
  • United States Grand Prix Formula returned to the Circuit of The Americas for the nineteenth race of the 2022 season. Although off-track dramas have been grabbing the media headlines, you can enjoy highlights of what really matters – the racing – over on the F1 YouTube channel.
  • Nascar at Homestead-Miami For many years the venue for the final round of the season, Nascar visited Homestead to give the title-hopefuls an opportunity to join Joey Logano in the Championship 4 next month. You can watch extended highlights on YouTube.
  • UK TCR Finale at Snetterton The UK TCR championship ended its fifth season at a damp Snetterton on Sunday. With production-based cars and a mix of veteran and up-coming drivers, UK TCR serves up some enjoyable tin-top racing. You can view a re-run of the final race of the season on the UK TCR YouTube Channel.
  • 2022 Formula Ford Festival It was wet too at Brands Hatch for the 51st running of the Formula Ford Festival. With some great Ford tin-top action on the schedule, you can scroll through Sunday’s full coverage and pick the races you want to watch. It’s all on the BRSCC YouTube Channel.
