I have purchaced an older but unused SCX Ferrari  360 , it has an an RX42 motor , which is very slow, how can I go about fitting the newer type FR motor? Is an adapter required ?

If i remember correctly the SCX 360 has a separate motor pod 
If so you can replace the motor pod with one for long can or flat motor
   
or with one for mabuchi FC130 motor
