The club has its Annual General Meeting coming up on Wednesday 2 November - a 5-minute formality before the Nascar race begins. All our HO and Scalextric digital plans for 2023 are usually unveiled in plenty of time before then. So here we go...
Race Fees: Remain the same - £3 (£2 under-16s) for a Wednesday evening and a Saturday morning or afternoon session. A full Saturday costs £6 (£4 under-16s). There are no added costs to borrow club cars or controllers. Terry is working on 2023 season ticket prices, which will offer a small discount.
HO racing calendar: this is easy to remember - a meeting on the first Wednesday of every month, starting on 4 January 2023. As always, the three classes will run in turn - WHO Mod, WHO Nascar and WHO F1.
HO rule changes for 2023: There are a couple of changes and a 'watching-brief' planned for 2023...
- Firstly, the new ‘2019’ Micro Scalextric chassis will be eligible to race in WHO Tuners and WHO Mod next season, following testing at the Barn over the summer. There are some nice Aston Martin, Porsche 911 and Lamborghini Huracán bodies arriving this year - all of which will require racing numbers to be added.
- The second change is that the minimum tyre height restriction in Formula One will be removed for both the Tomy Super-G+ and Mega-G chassis. This follows some successful testing at the Barn in September.
- The brass-weighted F1 Classic Cup class will continue in 2023, but we will review this in 12 months if participation remains low.
As usual, all the HO regulations will be updated on the WHO website after the final race of the year in December: http://www.whoracing.org.uk/rules.html
The 22-page WHO Digital 2023 Guide will be published in pdf format here and on the club website next week. However, this is a summary of what's in store...
In 2023, we’ll continue to develop our digital racing by building on what we do best. That means continuing with our Scalextric Sport Digital system, RCS64 race management software and Truspeed controllers for all our WHO/digital racing. It also means enjoying the Scalextric cars and classes that have provided spills and thrills since 2014 - although we’ll be creating more defined themes and events in 2023.
- The WHO Digital GT Championship takes a big leap forward this year. The six GT teams will have three two-hour Wednesday night races in January, March and May - with a four-hour climax to the championship in June. That Saturday will begin with a GT club car rotation to get us nicely warmed-up.
- We’ll still have four of our Nascar & Pioneer Legends Wednesdays in February, April, July and August. These remain fantastic fun and are a perfect introduction to our Scalextric digital racing.
- Our traditional Digital Saturdays are now Tin-Top Saturdays and round off the year in November and December. They will feature a club car rotation, three-race BTCC competition, a Sierra-BMW team race, plus the Muscle Car Mondiale heats and feature format.
- The WHO Goodwood Revival is back in September 2023 with an identical schedule to the inaugural event. We’d like to add two more classes - a front-motor ready-to-run (RTR) GT pairs race and a 50’s sports car team race. To make sure we get to enjoy all the classes every year, we’ve created a Goodwood Members’ Meeting-style theme for our October Saturday…
- The Birkett Relay is a wacky event dating back to 1951. Each team runs a variety of cars during the race - and we will use this format to create a 4-hour team race that lets us enjoy cars from various WHO Digital classes, including Slot.it Group C. The day will start with a Goodwood class. The relay runs during the afternoon and includes at least one Goodwood team-race class.
- We're working with Gary to bring a Slot.it oXigen race day to the Barn on Saturday 12 August. Keep an eye out for more details.
We hope these different themes will give an exciting ebb and flow to the WHO/digital year. As always, we’ve tried to make our events accessible for new racers and an enjoyable challenge for old-timers. Full participation is possible without owning any car - and every event begins with practice and a ‘Digital Driving School’ session.
Of course, if you have any questions about our HO or Scalextric digital racing - just ask.
