Slot.it Jaguar XJR-10 Raúl Boesel 1991
#1

Slot.it CA42b Jaguar XJR10 #3 - 3rd 300km Road Atlanta 1991. RRP £64.95. Available 18 October 2022.

A second livery on Slot.it's sublime Jaguar XJR-10 takes the IMSA GTP racer into 1991 and swaps Castrol colours for a Bud Light livery. The #3 car was driven throughout the 1991 IMSA season by Brazilian Raúl Boesel - the former March and Ligier F1 driver, who'd carved out a successful career in sports car and Indycar racing. This is the Jaguar he took third place on the podium at Road Atlanta, behind team mate Davy Jones who clinched a first victory for the new XJR-16.

The Jaguar XJR-10 was designed, developed and built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing for the 1989 IMSA GTP season. Together with the Group C XJR-11, the new car was an evolution of the highly successful Silk Cut Jags that had dominated the world sports car championship over the previous two years. TWR replaced the Jaguar V12 engine with a lighter and more compact V6 turbo - loosely based on that in the Group B MG 6R4 rally car - which was more suited to the shorter sprint races in North America. A 3-litre unit was used for the IMSA GTP cars, a 3.5-litre for the Group C XJR-11.

By 1991, TWR was developing the XJR-16 as a successor, but the XJR-10 wasn't done - adding two more victories to the four achieved in '89 and 1990. Davy Jones won at the Grand Prix of Palm Beach in March, Raúl Boesel winning at the Grand Prix of Miami a month later - both 2 hour races on street circuits. You can see plenty of the Bud Light XJR-10 cars in action during these extended highlights from Miami on Brazilian TV...

Raúl Boesel was just one of a stellar generation of Brazilian drivers to follow the trail-blazer Emerson Fittipaldi and make it into F1. A former show-jumping champion, Boesel headed to England in 1980, finishing second in that year's Townsend Thoresen British Formula Ford Championship - just behind Roberto Moreno and ahead of Jonathan Palmer. Following a season in British Formula 3 and third in the championship, the Brazilian made his Grand Prix debut - quite a meteoric rise. Sadly, Raúl Boesel's F1 career stalled following two difficult seasons with March and Ligier. He went on to spend more than a decade racing Indycars - and although often a front runner, victory eluded him. Five second places - plus third at the 1989 Indy 500 - were his best results.

Boesel enjoyed his most successful racing with Jaguar sports cars, winning the 1987 world championship. He took five wins on his way to the title, driving the legendary TWR XJR-8 alongside Eddie Cheever, John Nielsen, Jan Lammers, Martin Brundle and Johnny Dumfries. He then went on to win the 1988 Daytona 24 hours, sharing his XJR-9 with Brundle and Nielsen. Jaguar must hold rather good memories for the Brazilian...

The Slot.it car fits nicely into their huge Group C / IMSA GTP range and has the same layout as all the other models with an inline motor pod fitted as standard. The wiring connectors allow the Slot.it Carrera and Scalextric compatible digital chips to be installed without any need for soldering...

Raúl Boesel's 1991 Bud Light Jaguar XJR-10 will be available next week from retailers worldwide. Many thanks to Jo and the Slot.it sales team for sending us the magnificent images of the model.
