Scalextric C4220 Chevrolet Camaro IROC - SCCA Trans-AM - Number 33. RRP £46.99. Available August 2021
I admit to being a little underwhelmed by the first two Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z cars that were released last year. However, in the Duracell colours of Scott Sharp’s Camaro – winner of the 1991 SCCA Trans Am championship – I think Scalextric have brought out the best of this American racing classic. The 1984 IROC Z was aimed squarely at Scalextric's US market and seems to have gone down well there - I've seen plenty of Race of Champions re-liveries, with a small cottage industry producing the correct decals for a full IROC grid.
The Scalextric shape isn't the 1991 Trans-Am Camaro, but it's not a enormous step away. The Duracell #33 is an iconic Trans-Am livery - and Scott Sharp a fan favourite in North America. Still only 53, Sharp won the Trans-Am championship in '91 and '93, but is better known for his IndyCar and sports car racing exploits.
Here's some great 1991 Trans-Am action from the Trois-Rivières street circuit...
There are a few tasty Camaro liveries in that race for Scalextric to look at.
Scott Sharp's Camaro is still active in historic racing. The car is now owned by Bill Ockerlund and is pictured here during the 2018 Monterey Motorsports Reunion...
The Scalextric model features the standard in-line S-can motor, easy-fit guide and is digital plug ready (DPR) for easy conversion to digital.
Expect the Duracell Camaro to arrive with retailers very soon.
