Slot.it Mercedes 190E 'Camel' #3 Roland Asch - Winner Kyalami 1990

Slot.it CA44d Mercedes 190E DTM - #3 Roland Asch - Winner 1990 Kyalami Yellow Pages 200. RRP £64.95. Available 14 May 2022

This is definitely a car for Anthony's Belgium Kyalami layout. Marking the two visits DTM made to Johannesburg in 1990 and 1991, the #3 Camel-sponsored car created a bit of technological history in the process. And it is a cracking livery on the Slot.it Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II...

Twenty-five DTM touring cars were due to be shipped to South Africa in November 1990, but the Mercedes 'M7’ test car was missing. Reinhard A. Schulz, the boss of AMG South Africa and one of the people behind the Yellow Pages 200, managed to talk Camel into sponsoring the car and have it air-freighted to Johannesburg. The car looked the same as the other DTM Mercedes, but this one was the first to be fitted with ABS - a new technology in 1990. It took three days for the car to be wrapped in Camel colours - another technique that was new and unusual at the time...

Asch put the Camel Mercedes on pole position. Asch explains, “At Kyalami, we initially kept it a secret that the car had been equipped with ABS. When other drivers asked me about a button on the steering wheel that served to activate or to switch off the ABS, I said something about adjusting the brake balance!”

In the first race, Mercedes team mate Klaus Ludwig came out on top, ahead of Asch in second and Jörg van Ommen in another 190E third. In front of a capacity crowd of 42,000, Asch then turned the tables, winning the second race, ahead of Armin Hahne in the Zakspeed BMW and then Ludwig. As a result, Asch - runner-up in the 1988 and 1993 DTM - secured the much-publicised overall win from Ludwig and Hahne, scoring the first-ever victory for a car with a competition version of the ABS anti-lock braking system...

The post-race publicity announced that feat, but Asch remembers "Klaus Ludwig was really surprised when I overtook him with ease under braking!”

If you want to watch some of the race - with local commentary in English and Afrikaans - then both races are available on YouTube, this being the second of the two...

There is no ABS on the Slot.it car, it having a familiar Slot.it DTM layout under the body...

A big thank you to Jo and the team at Galileo engineering for sending through these fabulous pictures of the new car, which should be with most retailers over the next week.
