Anyone know the maximum guide blade length for use on the tightest Scalextric curves without binding, or should I just cut the aftermarket blades down to match the regular Scalextric blades to be on the safe side?

It's not purely a function of length, but also one of thickness.
For example, which may apply to your case, the Carrera guides are very long, but also very thick. BRM sells replacement blades, part number S-126, which are similar in length to the original, but quite a bit thinner, closer to the thickness of a Scalextric guide. These replacements will navigate the inside slot of a Scalextric R1 turn with ease, and no additional modifications needed.
Whenever we run Carrera cars on Sport track, we replace the original removable guide blade with the BRM product.

Thanks for that. Checked Pendles site and found them but it's not obvious from their photos how the braid fits?

They are direct replacements for the pop out guide on Carrera cars.
If you have a different kind of car, then those will not work.
What kind of car are you looking to replace the guide on?

Ah, everything but Carrera. MRRC, NSR and one or two other makes. I bought several cars from an ex-woodtrack racer.

Yes...including the cars I was interested in, but a bit like my builds and my driving, I was too slow!
I love puttering with gears

Ah, if he was racing them on wood tracks, he might have gone and replaced all the blades with longer, thicker, deeper guides, thinking that he would crash less. ;-)
So yeah, just get standard 1/32 guides. Pretty much anything that doesn't say "wood track" in the name of the guide will be fine.

Bear in mind, the base assumption that "nothing from any manufacturer will fit anything by another manufacturer" and you'll at least buy something that will fit properly.
eg, For nsr cars, buy nsr guides etc.
For NSR chassis' on plastic track, my favoured guide is nsr4844, a screw fit guide.

Just a note to say, If ever I sell anything with wood guides that anyone is interested in, I can likely supply the standard guide, or if not a suitable plastic track compatible one FOC. All you need to do is ask
