What's in the 2022 Scalextric Catalogue?
#41

I like a well filled wheel arch, but that Cobra is taking that to the extreme. Presumable the production model will not have tyre visible when viewed from above?

On the real car the rims are wider than the tyres (contact surface with the road).
On the Scalextric design the tyres are wider than the rims.
Why this difference? Maybe more grip?

I can already see the conversation going on in the production room. "Let's find a size of tire we already make for another car rather than making a custom tire for this car". The Trans Am tires on the Mustangs on the pics after the Cobra look very similar, don't they?

It's usually about money. Most people with the exception of purists like wide tires. Scalex used what they had in stock. Easy solution.

Purists can changes them to slim aluminum rims, etc...

Super looking car that Cobra is!!! I want one!

Thanks for posting these new releases, Andy!

Cheers,
Ken

That's an assumption I had - that Scalextric re-used parts from other models. However, from chatting to members of the Scalextric team last year, the only parts that are shared these days are the motor, gears, rear axle bushings, DPR hatch, screws, guide assembly and braid - with some ranges still sharing a driver helmet. Even the wiring looms and headlight boards are designed and manufactured for a specific mould... although the components presumably come from the same boxes.

However, all that is academic - the pictures of the Cobra and two Mustangs are 3D artist's renders taken from the CAD files. Those files have been - or will be - turned into the tooling in China, but how the final production model comes out will almost certainly be different.

That Cobra still looks good though Cool

So...what's with this Scalextric mid-season announcement of four or five new cars?

Did they suddenly come across them in a locked cupboard?

These were cars that would have been in the catalogue under normal circumstances. One of them was even a pixelated  teaser back in December... In  January, the Scalextric team said they wanted to concentrate on the the new tooling for 2022, plus the new cars that were scheduled for 2021 but had been delayed. Re-liveries that were planned had been shelved, not cancelled. See here.

So this new announcement is playing catch-up and leaving the 2023 catalogue open for more new tooling and more new liveries... The fact that they can make this announcement now seems a good sign the manufacturing backlog in the parts of China where the cars are produced is easing. However, Covid remains a massive problem in China, so expect uncertainly into 2023 and beyond.

There's a whole load of new 1:32 scale and Micro stuff on its way (rather than 'scheduled') over the next few months, including the 2022 Club car in the next few weeks. The 2023 Club car will be announced around Gaydon time. However, there's no doubt some of the 2022 releases will need to be pushed into 2023.

I'll post some stuff up tomorrow about these five new cars.

GRRRRR !
They are doing it again, I bought the Barracuda back when it was released, and once again awaiting its next livery for my racing pair.
I was hoping it would be out in the next batch coming in, seems not.  Time
Same issue we had with the Capri's first release.

Then there is the Rover. Yep, I want one. I suspect it will be superior handling to the Capri etc, as its (IRL) a wider car.
If to scale, it will be 4mm wider than the Capri.
So I will need a another racing livery, and following current form, that'll be around a year away  Tappingfoot

Totally having the same thought but projected to to receiving Collard Hot Rod (sometime maybe) what do i match it against, Scalextric seem to focus on the one, whereas for instance I've got two different liveried SCX Hyundai I20 WRX released at the same time.

I reckon they have George Polleys Anglia in the wings ready for next year, it makes sense.

You're fingers crossed right but there's about 10 'well known' alternative Escorts, most obviously Barry Lee that would use the same tooling.
