The latest issue of Slot Magazine - published by Doolittle Media - is available now for £5.50 from Pendle Slot Racing (here) and £3.99 for the ebook from pocketmags (here). The magazine is also available on subscription and from some WH Smiths stores.

The magazine is a great read and is well pitched across a broad interest range.

Am I correct in assuming that practically all the content is coming from the editor? If so he is doing a sterling job.

It is difficult to tell as many of the articles are uncredited but could well be the case. The editor is Terry Smith of Gaugemaster which is why you see a lot of references to that firm. The only other regular contributors are Richard Hills, Mark Hatton and Chris Walker.

In view of the magazine's chequered history and previous reputation for failing to pay its contributors it is perhaps not very surprising that other people are somewhat reluctant to contribute any copy.

In view of the magazine's chequered history and previous reputation for failing to pay its contributors it is perhaps not very surprising that other people are somewhat reluctant to contribute any copy.

I can tell you definitively, that at least one of the above mentioned contributors, does not receive any payment for contributions  .........that said, I have only sent in pics./articles for issues #43 and #44. 

To be honest, I did not ask for or expect anything in return....just though it a good thing to contribute a bit to a hobby that has given me so much

Slot Magazine is a commercial publication which presumably seeks to profit from anybody's articles. I will happily contribute FOC to non profit organisations like SlotRacer or the NSCC but would not dream of writing articles for Slot Magazine or any other commercial venture without payment at the relevant rate.

Terry puts a lot of work into Slot. I am sure he isn't doing it for nothing and the magazine certainly boosts the slot car brands that Gaugemaster distribute (his main job).

There was a lot of excitement when ADH Publishing added Slot to their range of hobby magazines. However, ADH went bankrupt, owing significant amounts of money to individuals and businesses in the slot car community, including the previous editor. The owner immediately relaunched many of his ADH titles under a new company Doolittle Media and approached plenty of people to become the new editor of Slot.

I'm sure this sort of thing happens all the time in business circles - but it's understandable that there's still some bad feeling around the magazine. Not with Terry, but with the publisher. I enjoy popping into WH Smiths and flicking through the magazine but I still can't bring myself to put £5.50 in the coffers of Doolittle Media.

Bloody great attitude there Chris, just getting a mention sent in by Chris Walker or slot car group is plenty recognition needed, I'd rather contribute for free so this hobby and industry can continue on, yes I am guilt of applying too much explanation but hey, better to be clear and precise rather than having others scratching their heads, going WTF!!!??
