Why did Scalextric put the driver on the right and then put left hand drive windscreen wipers on the model?

I think Scalextric opted RHD in favour of the racing Escorts with one driver figure at the right side. But they made the windscreen wipers for the often LHD rally Escorts.
As far as I know are the names of the driver and navigator always on the correct side of the rally Escorts MK1. It looks like that is the compromise that was chosen.
Not an easy choice for Scalextric.
