Revell '63 Ford Galaxie 500
#1

I bought a sad beatup Galaxie 500 with epoxied body mounts and a badly fitted chassis for what feels like an over inflated price but these don't come cheap.

After grinding out the offending infrastructure inside I started designing a 3D SW chassis.

These are big cars but not massively wide. After easing the wall thickness inside the wheel arches there's 59mm of room which is still going to be tight for a pair of 10mm wide tyres in sidewinder configuration in a plastic chassis (easy with a brass chassis}.

Phase one is print a test chassis and pod, you never get them right first time.
Offer the rolling chassis into the bodyshell and see what needs tweaking.
In this instance, not enough room for the SW spur and wheel...I'll fix that first.

Tin the rear axle, tap the axle through the spur gear to the right position, reheat the solder and put some in the grub screw holes, grind the spur gear boss back until the wheel slides on far enough to clear the inside of the wheel arch.
I do this because there's now no threaded holes for the grub screw, the gear won't move!

So far this is where I am, phase two is print a tweaked chassis, front axle needed moving back 1.5mm, the rear end lengthening 2mm and rotating upwards 4° then sills adding to the edges of the chassis to raise the body 1.5mm

This won't have my normal two body posts one at each end but four side mounts like a Revoslot.

The SW pod has an adjustable height axle and doesn't use normal bearings....

More updates on the coming days

A very cool old car, Kevan. What scale is it?

Not quite a roller yet but MK3 chassis.

31T spur soldered onto the axle then the boss ground back so the wheel can slide nearer the pod to clear the bodyshell.

Tyres not glued and trued yet.

Guide location is modified from my other chassis... and I like it.

It's a runner!

After gluing/truing the tyres then skimming the sidewalls to clear the chassis and bodyshell it was time to test it.

I like heavy cars and never run without ballast but wanted to see how this went with no ballast.

It's already pretty hefty with no windows or interior it tips the scales at 78g

My little test track is a Scaley Sport Rally run, five hairpins, one crossover and takes about 4 seconds for a quick car to go round twice.

Although I didn't time it this land barge was getting round under 5 seconds.  I was expecting a deslot-fest with no ballast but had to push really hard to get it to deslot so this is a really pleasant surprise.

Next job is to reduce the 2mm ground clearance for even better handling...and some damping O-rings between the body mounts and chassis to reduce an unpleasant rattle.

Track width under the bodywork is 58mm across the tyre walls and 10mm wide tyres.

Nice one Kev, Predator motors are really good. I wish someone stocked them over here.

One of our club members got $200 worth to make it worthwhile, I have the last two on the table in front of me.

It'll be getting a proper test tonight as it's club night.

...and those front wheels, last seen on a Corvette Grand Sport are growing on me but I have some steelie insert stl's to make

After raising the axles 1mm and putting silicone 'O' rings between the chassis and body mounts it's definitely less rattly and a timed run on my test track is 12 laps in 43 seconds...which is quicker than a lot of my Rally cars.

Ballast will definitely dampen the car down and make it more predictable but I'm going to test it as it is.

With windows/interior/driver it's now 85g which feels lightweight to me, a car this huge would normally be 100g...but I'm more than happy to be shown the possible error of my ways  Thumbup

Of course this reduced weight means better acceleration and braking but will reduce it's cornering speed potential and increase the chance of deslots...adding ballast will be the opposite of those.

Kevan,

Looks and sounds great!

1/32 Galaxies are a tad more rare than 1/25 scale.

I am somewhat familiar with this car for some strange reason.

As I suspected it is too light and too top-heavy for non-mag racing on a fast circuit...but did get round one of our Rally stages quite easily for such a big barge, even managing to get round the hairpins with a hay bale in the middle.
