I've been experimenting with an X-Box controller as a (2.4GHz Radio controlled) slot car controller.
I believe ESRM allows use of these controllers via Bluetooth + PC, but I'm using an Arduino with nRF24l01+ radio module in the XBox controller so it talks directly to the car. I just tweaked the firmware I use on my other controllers and loaded it on. Works great.

Works, or works as well as a proper controller?

I've not used any of those controllers, so it's hard for me to say.
A 'proper' controller is probably a highly subjective topic I would think :)
My X-Box controller functions as well as any, i.e variable throttle curve, min throttle , max throttle, variable brakes, lane change for digital - mappable to any button. Multiple throttle lever options for left and right handed people. etc.
Not trying to sell any :)

If you can set up your Xbox race game and controller to mirror your actual slot car track so that you can get a few hundred hours of practice in, you are going to be flying when you go down the club on race nights!
