C4324 Scalextric Ford Escort MK1 RAC Rally 1971
#1

Scalextric has not produced a true slot rally car since 2015. It is great to see them back now with the RAC Rally 1971 Ford Escort MK1 of Timo Mäkinen/ Henry Liddon.
Timo and Henry were leading the British event until the gear lever popped out of the box. A lot of time was lost, so they could only take fifth place behind their teammates Mikkola/Palm.

I changed the Escort from RHD to LHD and added some paint to the driver figures.
Both changes have been corrected to the example of the real car.
The 1971 RAC Rally was partly a snowy event.

Wonderful memories. My mother moved to the North York Moors and the RAC used to run stages in the forests near her cottage.

Never got a chance to get up there when the rally was nearby.

I love puttering with gears

I wrote "Scalextric has not produced a true slot rally car since 2015". That should be "since 2018".
I have overlooked the Lancia Stratos C3930 and C3931 from 2018.
Three years shorter but it felt like eight years ago. Sun Tappingfoot

Hi Hub  Wavegreen

I did the same with the Scalextric VW Beetle racer of TV personality Drew Pritchard.
It was produced as right hand drive, but should have been left hand drive, annoyed the heck out of me!

A quick bit of modifying, and it was all good.

Keep up the good work,
Pip

Why did Scalextric put the driver on the right and then put left hand drive windscreen wipers on the model? Tappingfoot

I think Scalextric opted RHD in favour of the racing Escorts with one driver figure at the right side. But they made the windscreen wipers for the often LHD rally Escorts.
As far as I know are the names of the driver and navigator always on the correct side of the rally Escorts MK1. It looks like that is the compromise that was chosen.
Not an easy choice for Scalextric.

The Embassy Team RAC Rally 1971 Escort is my favorite Scalextric rally slot car of this year.
Fingers crossed for another real classic rally Escort MK1 next year. Thumbup

.........  And why do they chrome-plate the radiator grilles on the RS1600s when, on the 1:1 cars they were bare metal?  Matt silver (or aluminium) paint would be better - and would save me the job.

Best regards,
Stuart.
