Tyre Truing Techniques

I have a standard technique I follow for truing tyres on my Hudy that works for Slot.it N22s and NSR Ultragrips...short 4 second dabs onto the roller at around 0.4amp pressure, bit longer off, repeat until tyres trued. Basic job done! 

But when I followed this routine with some Scaleauto AS25s (and to a lesser extent some Slot.it G25s) I have been getting the following sticky results: - 

   

How should I be adapting my technique to avoid this result? And can these tyres be rescued?

Hi Jeremy,

Can you lower the voltage on your power supply to the Hudy in order to slow the speed down?

It looks like the tire/tyre is melting.

Yeah...I'm running at 3 volts. Should I be using shorter dabs, or less pressure, or do harder tyres require a different method?

You're on the right track experimenting with both less pressure, and shorter dabs at the wheel. Anything to reduce the heat will help. It will likely take more time to true hard tires.

I take twice as long to true tires as compared to my friends. But I feel they come out better.

Maybe someone has a cooling technique they can suggest?

I just considered that the grinding wheel might also be clogged up. Tire material against tire material can only result in a melting mess.

Maybe you need to clean the grinding wheel between dabs?

Squirt a little lighter fluid on the tyre to cool it down as you are trueing them...

SlotIt G25's and NSR Black 'reds' are both bad for this, I didn't struggle much with the A-S25's.

I've reverted to using my RSM3 truer with the '3D reciprocator mod' for the gummy tyres and find 5V and 80 grit paper best as anything finer clogs the grit.

I found the best way to true is to clean the grinding medium with lighter fluid and a soft brass wire brush then true some more then keep repeating until the tyres are done.

Cleaning the gummy crud off the tyres often seems to greatly help also...sadly truing these is a PITA job  Tappingfoot

You'll find these are perfectly fine once you get them on the car and clean them with your usual tape but keep on rollin' rollin' rollin' and it'll be fine  Thumbup

I used to use IsoPropyl Alcohol - IPA Isopropanol 100%, dab a lint free cloth in the IPA and run this on the tyre, as the IPA evaporates it cools the tyre down. I've since switched over to Shellite whihc does a similar thing but I also use the Shellite to clean the tyres during racing, works a treat. 

The Shellite will melt the rubber back to some sort of normal before truing, to some extent, get the car on the track and the tyres come up a treat.

+1 for the IPA technique. I use it on pretty much every kind of rubber that *might* have that happen, which is pretty much anything other than stock Scalextric or Carrera rubber, or urethane.
