Brighton to John O'Groats Road Race -Proxy Event 2021 REPORT

(2nd-Jun-21, 09:01 AM)Graham Wrote:  The hosts,
I think this went really well, it could be difficult for me at times at collator, to see all the results when they were posted upside down, sideways, just too many digits in the timings  Rofl  or just knowing exactly when the host was going to run the cars. So communications could have been improved but I can't fault the dedication and care taken by the hosts shown in running their stages.

Eventually I just copied the results into PaintShop Pro where I could rotate & resize to my hearts content, made it very easy in the end.

A couple more points from me (I'll shut up soon, promise)

1. Home advantage, personally I cant see a problem, I'd be less happy if the previous method was used (Home drivers take the median time for the stage), to penalize a fast car because it's owner has given up his spare time to run a stage is totally unfair.

2. My only criticism, we need a definitive rule for the method of dealing with 'offs', personally I think if a car has an off it should be marshalled 'live', but if we are running (as in one stage), 'off laps' are not counted, it should be uniform across ALL stages.
Even the best drivers/cars will make a mistake once in a while and I think it adds to the fun if the leader could 'have a mare' on the last stage and throw it away.
I can use one of my cars as an instance, I lost 21 seconds on the first stage with an off, had that happened on stage 3 (I think) that 21 seconds wouldn't have counted. It would have made no difference in the end but I always felt that I was chasing shadows.

My final thing, people saying what their cars cost, my Class A & B cars were eBay finds, £8 and £33 respectively.

The Class A Merc had the braids replaced with soft copper and NSR ultragrip tyres (lightly trued) fitted, a small amount of lead was added towards the front.
Class B Corvette had some 2nd hand ultragrip tyres fitted to increase ground clearance.
Class C Porsche was a competition prize from SlotCar magazine, left absolutely standard except that the motor was changed out from the standard M7 (21k) to a M6 (20k)

"As for why the Beamers did so badly, contact Paul Cooper his Honda Civic ran very well and they essentially are much the same car, in fact these BTCC scalex cars had the advantage of having the slot motor slightly recessed lower on the chassis on these cars, which as scrutineer I perhaps should have not allowed as they were of marginally lower track clearance than the 2mm allowed compared to other scalex models, but abit of discretion was used as these Scalex cars were fixed chassis."

The rules had quoted 1.5mm for the minimum clearance. I know I had built my cars close to this and had seen no clearance issues on any of the tracks. I don't have a problem if it is better to go to a 2mm clearance, but possibly the BMW issues were note solely down to track clearance alone.

I agree that timings showed a home advantage link, and that the method used to curb this, in the previous proxy gave too much penalisation of hosts. However, there are other methods to bring the home/driver advantage in line with performance across the other stages. This is something which needs to be developed when going through the timings from this event. Then an application method that can be applied on completion of the stage, not at the end of the rally. After all, the hosts are only hosts for 2 of the 12 stages, so I am sure they would like to see their times balanced across the other 10 stages.

I would like to give a big thank you to Graham and all the hosts.

It’s was good to see so many different cars and tracks.

I needed to buy a Scalextric car having not owned one for a few years. My Aston was £35 off eBay. I tried to find the widest and lowest car they did.
I did the same as Bernie and fitted NSR’s to the back. One started to split after a few days
So changed it.. then the new one started splitting..but I needed to send it off so took the chance and sent it off to Graham.
I put about 10 grams up front.. any more didn’t make any difference.

I kept the standard guide as changing it seemed a faff.

My Class B Merc was a mix of lots of bits!
I sprayed the body shell way back at the end of 2019 ready for the 2020 National championship.. but then COVID turned up..
when I saw GT3 cars could run in class B I ordered a soft blue chassis for it.
Fitted the standard spec King 21K motor and medium suspension.
Gear ratio I think is 12/34.
I opted for the NSR rally guide and fitted a small spring as I wasn’t sure how bumpy the tracks were going to be.
I used the standard size 17’ NSR hubs to help get the ground clearance with glued and trued NSR Supagrips on them.
I added no weight to the chassis, I probably should of fitted the light weight interior but didn’t want to make the body illegal for the National series.

My Class C GT40 was a mixture of my old Wales and west spec cars. I only used the white hard chassis because that’s the only one I had with the adjustable front axle grub screws.
The GT40 used a 20K Shark 11/32. No added weight.
I couldn’t run the standard NSR 16’ hubs on the GT40 because the boss was too wide to make the legal width, so opted for Slot it 16.5 drilled hubs which also helped with the ground clearance.

All my cars had NSR tinned braid fitted. I ran this because it’s more durable.. it may be a few tenths slower but doesn’t twist as much.

The weekends were fun when the results started coming in. I also enjoyed running stage 4.

Looking forward to the next proxy.

Cheers
Phil

Wavegreen Hello again

Sorry Classicchrisk, I almost missed you point, yes your right about the clearance of 1.5mm, my head is already filled with the next, or is it the one after that Proxy event, but no I don't think the track clearance was anything to do with your cars general performance, I think if I remember it may have  bottom out a couple of times on some of the Rally tracks, I did note that it was slightly below the 1.5mm clearance, but probably Pauls was too.

yes just abit of fun

But if any clever chap wanted to convert our 1/32nd scale record times into real times I would be interested to hear ?

Our estimated total combined track length was ~240metres

And many thanks to Leo, for reminding me that delivery day is tomorrow, been so used to fixing for Wednesday for everyone else.

So onwards and upwards,

First we have this in September (brought forward from October)

And In October we have

And will there be another Road Race, I guess it depend alot of what happens between now and next year. If there is enough appetite for it from our dedicated team of hosts and there is still enough interest from our eager entrants one year on I would be more than willing to organise a repeat but slightly different Road Race.
We will revisit the subject in October.

I was going to post some undercover photos of our winners cars, but I see Team Demon has already exposed their secrets,

So I hope to see you on the next Proxy threads

your overestimating my photography skills  Rofl

And I don't think it would show up the "Magic Hereford dust" you used.

But OK, when the cars eventually get back here , we will open the cars up   Wrench and have a ganders

It would be handy to have my Bentleys back by 10th if that's possible once photos taken?

Thanks for organising and for all the efforts from the hosts. My only comment, and this might just be me, is that between real names, forum names and team names, I struggled to follow whose car was whose. Perhaps simpler to stick to forums names...?

I love puttering with gears

as stated above huge props to Graham and the rest of the team
and thanks to all the entrants for allowing us this oppertunity to compare so many cars

as a host in this event i must say i thoroughly enjoyed my hosting weekend and keeping upto date each week with the results

regarding home advantage , i was very conscious of this and for my part the only advantage shown was with the tied class A heat  Bigsmile  but seriously if any advantage was gained , it was unconsciously

regarding number of entrants 70 was a bit OTT , a few less would give more time for each car , not only to be run , but to be properly evaluated , which is what we all want , feed back be it good or bad

regarding 'offs' , obviously s--t happens but it can also depend greatly 'where' the off is  , especially when driving and marshalling solo , maybe this could be looked at in future ( perhaps not as much a problem as covid eases ) but i do like the best 10 laps out of say 12 idea , but thats just me

regarding footage , again this came down to number of entries/time , next time will deffo be better ( this is link to class B Class B Goldrock Circuit 22 May - YouTube  didnt post earlier because it was received mid Leo's weekend and didnt want to distract from that )

teams , dont know what to think about that especially as some teams didnt field cars in every class ( although i did and it didnt help hehehe )

cars , class A was a stock GT wide and low , cant remember if added ballast , thunderslot tyres
class B was the WHO rally proxy entry nissan , but did not fare well as it was inline against AW/SW cars , thunderslot tyres again
class C was a stock scally GT40 , tyres trued right down to acheive the minimum clearance allowed , i was surprised how well this car ran , and think was the pick of the 3 scally fords ( maybe only due to andys breakdown )

the beamers , they did not perform well on either of my tracks , why , im unsure , they seemed long and narrow with hi cog to me ,  which was surprising since i heard good things about them

the highlight for me .... that little TR4 ... i just fell in love and im now looking for my own

looking forward already to next year , although the ironing board might have to be retired

looking forward to seeing under the bonnet of some of the winners , didnt dare when i had them incase i messed something up ( only had to tweek one car , which was a puzzle tbh )

anywho enough from me

kev ( keith , kevin , kevein ) take your pick  Rofl

btw ... can any1 fix SCX Chrono Rally start ramp consoles ?

Guessing that's not including the all of laps covered; just the total distance of all the tracks put together?
