Strombecker Chaparral 2D build/rebuild...

Growing up. I never really bothered with the cars from Strombecker, as there were plenty more cars that performed much better,....however they did produce some very nice bodies, ones that with a bit of work could be made to look very nice indeed.

Over the last few years, I have built several that have turned out very nicely, and their Chaparral 2D is the one I am tackling next.

Out of the box, it sits much too high, and the stamped aluminum/plastic chassis leaves a lot to be desired,.....coupled with the fact that mine is red, which is just not the appealing to me in any way.

Here is the starting point,....nice shape, but, still a ton to be improved upon..........too high, inaccurate wheelbase, poor shut lines etc. etc., not to mention the chassis

I will be building the version that ran at the 1966 Nurburgring, as this one ran with "painted" headlight covers,.....and I am not attempting to cut out the existing headlight covers, and make some clear ones, so the attached pic. is the one I am doing.

I have built the chassis,...a single rail (.047 wire) chassis, that will offer good torsional flex, and should make the little car handle quite well. It will be powered by a 20K "050" motor in a sidewinder configuration, and this required some very tight packaging.

Not much yet done on the body,...it has been stripped, sanded/filled/primed, shut lines cleaned up. and a few of the vents cut open.

I will post updates as progress continues.

I'm currently watching the two best rugby teams in the world, and it is a brutal sporting contest.

But why are South Africa playing at this world cup in pale turquoise?

All their fans are still kitted out in the traditional dark green, and it seems strange to me to see them ditch that.

What were they thinking? Tappingfoot

We need your help!   Thumbup

We're asking anybody who has an interest in slot cars to take a few minutes to fill in an online questionnaire. It's very simple, and it really does just take a few minutes.

From the answers we get we are hoping to be able to produce some interesting statistics about the state of the hobby, for instance where slot cars are most popular, which brands of car and track people prefer and so on. I'm hoping we might even be able to delve into some comparisons between different countries and markets.

It's easy to assume we already know all the answers, but there may be a few surprises in store.

We need as many people as possible to fill in the questionnaire to make it relevant. So please click on the link below and take a few minutes to fill it in. Please also pass on the link to any other slot car fans you know. Thank You.

Online Slot Car Questionnaire

We're hoping to start publishing some results in a few weeks.

After driving a Scaley Astra V8 in the Touring car proxy I was so impressed I bought one too.

Taking it to bits found a white metal insert in the rear...looked easy enough to recreate in CAD so made a 3D replacement.

Original is nearly 7g, 3D one is nearly 2g.

Can the Dragon Snake shake off its skin issues? Who wants a pink Cobra anyway?

Also in paint: Nick's been building wheels and may have to break a vow of abstinence by adding to his Porsche 956 collection with just one more white kit. There must be something in the air (other than pink paint flakes) because even Scott's contemplating trying a Ferrari F1 white kit. All sense has fled.
