Traditional Colours - JasonB - 23rd-Sep-23

I'm currently watching the two best rugby teams in the world, and it is a brutal sporting contest.

But why are South Africa playing at this world cup in pale turquoise?

All their fans are still kitted out in the traditional dark green, and it seems strange to me to see them ditch that.

What were they thinking? Tappingfoot

Thankfully (for me) Rugby holds zero interest even though I've tried to watch in the past  Thumbup

I guess my main point was about teams discarding their traditional colours, which strikes me as odd.

Which makes you wonder why is there such a thing as a 'traditional' colour for a sporting team...that in itself is even odder.

RE: Traditional Colours - JasonB - 24th-Sep-23

It doesn't seem odd at all to me.

It's part of a team's identity, an established history that in many cases began long before I was born.

Ferrari generally race in red, Bentley's are green. Liverpool play in red, Everton in blue.

At a very simple level, if a team constantly changes its colours, it makes recognition more difficult.

RE: Traditional Colours - Kevan - 24th-Sep-23

I may have been bothered by changing of traditional colours when I was younger but the world has changed so much in recent years that to be honest I couldn't care less now.

I'm a United fan of nearly 60 years, if they decided to play in pink with blue spots I'd probably think actually that's rather good.

Newcastle? West Ham? Colchester? Rotherham? Leeds?

As it happens I support United, Leeds United. Tease

Ironically we did actually change our colours, and went on to one of the most successful periods in our history, which perhaps undermines my argument. Tappingfoot

But that happened nearly 60 years ago, before I was old enough to notice, and now I'd be horrified if we moved away from the all white kit.

I guess there is a balance to be found, and you're obviously right that the world has changed, and that balance is now in a different place. But there are very sound reasons for using established colours, as I'm sure the marketing team at the second best football team in Manchester would agree. Rofl

There's only one United...and you know that all too well  Bigsmile

...there was a record released too  Wavegreen

Manchester United is a contradiction in terms, so it doesn't even count. Wrench

If Manchester were United, they wouldn't have two teams.
