Lancia Rally (037) re-imagined

At the end of the 70's Lancia/FIAT needed a replacement for the Lancia Stratos and the FIAT 131 Abarth which had represented the group in the World Rally Championship. The decision was made to base the new car on the Lancia Montecarlo (which had been named in honour of the Stratos success in Rallye Monte-Carlo). Significant changes produced the car that overcame the limitations of rear-wheel-drive to compete well with the likes of the all-wheel-drive Audi Quattro.

Although the Rally did not capture the hearts of fans as much as the Stratos, it does have an enthusiastic following. One of these admirers decided to design a newer version of the Rally whilst retaining the original concept of simplicity. Being a slot-car fan, he has put his design into production.  Although it is a 1:32 scale product, I believe it is the only re-imagined Lancia Rally to go beyond the artist's impression stage.

The car came to my attention in a thread by the designer 'NikS' on SFI, where it was used as the development mule for a brush-less motor installation. I asked the designer if I could buy a copy and below is the outcome of that acquisition. The bodyshell is 3D printed by Shapeways and that does have implications in terms of the smoothness of the body. Its a ground up design including the motor-pod and guide - a proper job!

The build led to a dynamic looking and great running slot car...
Martini-striped version to follow.
