WHO Racing July 2022 - WHO Mod
#1

WHO Mod & WHO Tuners Race Night - Round 7 of the 2020-22 WHO club championship

Regulations can be found here: https://www.whoracing.org.uk/rules.html

We'll be running on this monster 100-foot track...

Doors open at 6.30pm - please don’t arrive earlier (unless you’re part of the set-up crew, of course) and we ask that all racers aged 12 or younger bring a responsible adult with them.

Race fees: £3 adults and £2 under-16s. We now have a pre-pay option - ask Terry for details.

Club Cars & Controllers: Our AFX Mega-G+ club cars are available – each of them stays on its coloured lane. We also have a big box of DS, Parma and Ninco loaner controllers to borrow one for the whole evening. There is no extra charge for using either the club cars or the controllers.

Covid precautions: Covid cases are rising quite rapidly again - 1 in 30 people ten days ago. We’ll be keeping our usual common-sense precautions in place to keep vulnerable members of the extended WHO family safe. The main thing is to stay away if you have any symptoms that could be Covid. Inside the Barn, wearing a face mask, practising good hand-hygiene and giving each other space are non-negotiable requirements. We will ensure as good ventilation as possible - and also have hand sanitiser and spare masks available if you forget your own. Any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

As always, post-race coverage will be posted here through Thursday.

A big thanks to all 18 racers at the Barn last night. It was a typically laid-back, but hugely competitive July WHO Mod event. Here are the video highlights of the six finals...

Results, report and updated championship tables to follow.

Race Report - Heats

Eighteen racers made their way to the Barn for a fairly typical July WHO Mod evening - an end-of-term atmosphere, but the usual high-speed and highly-competitive action. We run two classes - the ultra-fast, lexan-bodied WHO Mod cars and the hard-bodied WHO Tuners. This time there were ten Mods and eight Tuners, a random heat selection throwing up a first heat of Tuners and then a second race of our fastest Mods - it was a good start to the night...

Simon's track was adjusted slightly from the plan to help with marshalling, adding an extra another ten feet to its already monster lap length. We used every single 15-inch straight in the box. It was a fast track, but the long straights meant care was needed into the turns - and an absolutely perfect two-minutes would be a difficult task. During the evening, data was collected using one of the new Micro Scalextric chassis, ready for their introduction into WHO Turners next season - the Superman car was quick on the straights, but the corners were a challenge!

The top six Mod cars battled through the evening for the top places - Keith ended up on pole and Jerome just pipping Andy to second. Those three would be the automatic qualifiers for the A Final. Pete was a strong fourth, but Matthew and Deborah would be disappointed with costly errors - Matthew recorded the fastest lap time of qualifying and would have a chance to make amends in the finals. Oliver, Terry, Mike and Laurence were the second-string Mods cars, Laurence having a nightmare with his rear axle popping out of his Super-G+ at the slightest off. Ash was top qualifier of the Tuners, just ahead of Isaac and then Kevin third. Duncan beat Simon in their perennial battle and Harry beat Alan, Vicky gradually finding good pace through her heats, getting ready for her final.

Here are all the stats from the heats...

Race Report - Finals

Harry, Alan and Vicky were the first to race and they made sure the F Final was an absolute cracker! Their two minute race was full of incident, but somehow they all stayed on the same lap. Harry was the early leader, his choice of yellow lane looking good. Then a crash for the youngster meant Vicky had the lead - and she headed the Mega-G+ train until two offs with 30 seconds to go looked to have gifted Harry the race win... However, a crash for Harry saw Vicky back in first, Alan in second and Harry third - and that's how it finished.

Vicky stepped up into yellow lane for the E Final, battling with Kevin, Simon and Duncan for Tuners championship points. Kevin was on a mission over the first few laps, pulling out a gap until a fifth lap crash dropped him back. Duncan took over the lead and banged in sixteen flawless laps - no-one could get near him. The other three all had a couple of crashes each - one of Vicky's requiring repairs - Kevin finished a comfortable second, but Vicky very nearly pipping Simon for third.

It was Duncan's turn in yellow for the D Final - and this proved to be one of the best races of the night. Yellow was the longest way round and had a couple of tricky inside corners, but if anyone could make it work it was Duncan... He was up against Laurence in the first of the Mods, plus the fastest two Tuners, Ash and Isaac.  Duncan binned it on the first lap, but then came back strong with a typically fast and faultless race. Isaac had the pace to lead Laurence in the opening laps - Laurence perhaps treading carefully, knowing what would happen to his rear axle should he crash. It was Isaac who slipped up - Laurence and Ash were through and Duncan wasn't far behind. Laurence gradually upped the pace, pulling out a decent gap - but one crash would end things. Behind, Ash and Isaac fought it out for the Tuners' honours - both had a couple of offs and each time Duncan got closer. It was exciting to watch, a quarter of a lap covering the three Tuners at the end - Ash, then Isaac and Duncan. As the top under-16 racer on the night, Isaac had won the Junior medal.

Laurence had held it together to win and joined three other Mods in the C Final. Mike had the best pace at the start, but an excursion into the scenery handed the lead to Terry on lap 7. With both Laurence and Mike falling by the wayside, the battle for the win was between the Vipers of Terry and Oliver. The two couldn't be separated on pace, but it was a mid-race off for Oliver that gave Terry a small cushion that equated to just over half a lap at the chequered flag.

Huge stakes in the B Final... seeing who could redeem themselves from a less-than-ideal qualifying and put themselves in the frame for the overall race win. Pete had qualified fourth and led from the start. Terry was having a nightmare in yellow and Matthew was off on lap three - Deborah taking the lead on lap seven when Pete crashed. Nonetheless, the front three remained on the same lap. A couple more offs dropped Pete out of the running, leaving Deborah in the lead and Matthew - with marginally the faster car - hunting her down. This was all about pace - and was thrilling to watch as the cars lapped 110 feet in under five seconds (or a little over 15mph), Matthew gaining a few hundredths of a second each lap. With around 30 seconds to go, Matthew took the lead - but it was short-lived. A costly excursion handed the race to a relieved and delighted Deborah!

The A Final promised to be a humdinger - especially with Deborah staying in white lane. Coming off two perfect minutes of racing, no-one was surprised when Deborah led the opening thirty seconds of the race. Keith just about kept in touch, but Jerome was being gapped and Andy was dropping tenths each lap in yellow lane, before grinding to a halt on lap ten - a fraction after Deborah binned it and lost the lead. It was pedal to the metal for the remaining trio after that eventful tenth lap - Keith edging out an extra tenth over Jerome pretty much every lap and Deborah hanging on, a lap adrift. When the race ended, Keith had a huge score - 24.20 laps was the best of the night. Jerome's 23.50 wasn't shabby - and Deborah managed 22.30, despite another off right at the end. Her 4.740 second lap was the best of the finals, but Matthew's 4.558 from the heats was the fastest of the night.

Huge congratulations to Keith for his second WHO Mod race win - his first was five years ago in July 2017. Isaac picked up another Junior medal, ahead of Harry. Ash won the Tuners class and Laurence finished top of the six rookies on the grid tonight. Bravo!

About the only thing left to do is update the championship tables (probably tomorrow), although you might be interested in how Micro Scalextric Superman got on...

The WHO Mod and Tuners championships are looking interesting with just one round to go in October...

Jerome is certainly on course for his first overall championship and looks unbeatable in the juniors - which is a continuation of 2020, when he, Aiden and Oliver were still juniors...

It's now a three-way battle for the Tuners title...

As for the Club Championship tables, we're still a long way out to know who'll be the Club Champion this year... although it almost certainly will be a first-time winner!

Jerome has pretty much wrapped up his last Junior title...

And Laurence keeps adding big points to his growing tally in the Rookie competition...

Nascar and F1 are still at their half-ways points - and it's Nascar next on Wednesday 3 August.
