Greetings all. I’m in Southern California, retired and getting back into slot cars. A long time ago I worked at one of the first slot car stores in New Jersey when I was in high school. As time went on the slot car trend slowed and I guess more or less ended. Now that I have grandchildren (technically they’re my wife’s grandchildren) I thought about getting back into it to maybe try and get the oldest of the kids away from the little screen that always seems to be in his hands.
Anyway, I started with buying a bunch of Scalextric classic track and building a track on three 4x8 tables that folded up in the garage. I sold that track and bought Scalextric digital track. I liked the idea of being able to race more than 2 cars at the same time. I built a table that is 16’ x 7’. It tilts up against the wall of the garage on plywood legs that are curved at the back.
I’m now trying to figure out if I can build a track out of MDF and have it on a table with a metal stud frame because the current track is getting too heavy to lift as I get older ?. I’m also looking at suspending it from the ceiling and using a winch to raise and lower it. I think I have the frame any table figured out and I think I can rig up a pulley system that will allow me to lift it up and down. The height is limited by storage racks and the garage door opener but there’s just enough room to get it up to where we will be able to walk under it.
I’m now trying to figure out how to best incorporate the lane changers and pit lane system into the MDF track.
That’s where I am at this point. I found links tosome posts on here that showed the lane changers into MDF tracks but after I registered I couldn’t find them again. I’ll keep looking.
