Race report and results - 2nd July June 2026 -

As there were a few regulars away, we had time to increase heats to 3 minutes for the six club members tonight.

Well that was a good mix of car types, Kev’s little Anglia mixing it with the much bigger saloons.  A pair of Group 5 cars and a DTM racing for top honours in Prostock class with Geoff’s Mustang having the edge over Brian’s Capri and Paul’s Alfa 155.
Andy’s Peugeot looks like the interior has come loose and rubbing on the drivers side rear tyre wearing a 3mm wide groove off the tread… that didn’t make it any easier for the rest to try and catch it though!

Ed’s XK120 originally built for proxy events is perfect for multiple events and was massively outperformed by the much quicker Prostock cars, slowing to let faster cars by every couple of laps must have been off-putting, I hope that didn’t spoil his enjoyment of driving it.
.

Andy’s NSR Hypercar had it’s first race tonight, what a great car, it’s competitive against the Moslers with not much setup.  From what we’ve seen already, a recommended car to buy!

Kev’s ‘Copper Rocket’ Mosler got its annual run-out tonight, “It could do with a quicker motor” made Brian laugh!

Paul & Brian raced a couple of regulars, Paul’s SlotIt Maserati MC GT4 and Brian’s SlotIt Porsche 956, both very nice runners, both very consistent cars without foibles.

Talking of foibles, did Geoff’s Revoslot Toyota GT1 really go better once he’d smashed the wing off… or was that a trick of the light?  The fact is it went better each race and a 6.3 second hot lap for a Revoslot is pretty good!

Five SRF Sidecars tonight with more to come!... Ed’s outfit is nearly ready to race

In order of appearance on the track we saw:

No ‘newcomers’ this week but George has started on his Sidecar, painted red, it’ll be interesting what he does to finish the job.
.

• Brian’s Sidecar was back!... no squeak, no inexplicable deslots just smooth as you like and quicker than it was when he first raced it.
  
• Talking of smooth, Andy’s Gulf outfit was on a mission tonight, uncatchable in Yellow lane with another 6.1 sec hot lap.
  
• Paul’s outfit didn’t like the hairpin at the top of the hill in Red lane but made up for it with a good run in Blue lane.
  
• Geoff’s Sidecar is another consistently improving outfit, down in the 6.6 sec’s is a good time for these.
  
• It was Kev’s turn for the flip of the coin that is ‘luck’ (deslots/marshal help required) and tonight was ‘tails you lose’ and couldn’t match Andy’s score overall.
  
• No missed laps this week.

Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:

• Gearing - 3:1 or thereabouts, i.e. 11/34, 12/34 or 12/36.  This gives plenty of acceleration and brakes and more than enough top speed.
  
• 10mm wide tyres gives a great selection of tyre choices, tried and tested compounds in this size on BallaYorkley are NSR Alan Mann Untragrips, Thunderslot 002 or 004’s and NSR Zero graining tyres (if you have the patience to true them as they take ages!)
  
• A good chunk of ballast down the centre of the chassis seems to work well.
  
• A small diameter front tyre so it doesn’t foul the chassis or touch the bodywork.
  
• How tight the bodyshell fixing screws are seems to have a big effect on handling, trial & error here.

Five of us tonight which means two drivers and three marshals.

Club Ford GT40

This time of year lap times are always down slightly, it’s always been the case in the middle of a hot summer.
Chris set the fastest lap with the yellow car whilst getting the only 23 lapper of the night!... then had his worst run in the blue lane!!
It turns out the blue car was the main deciding factor for everyone as it’s the slowest of the trio of GT40’s.  It adds a little jeopardy to a class with identical cars.

F1 & Grand Prix

• One Grand Prix car, Pauls Aston Martin DBR4 which we’ll probably also see next week in the Mike Dove Memorial Classic Grand Prix
  
• Everyone else raced NSR F1’s, all running the same motor, varying choices of tyres and gearing and ballast.
  

Dave & Chris finished on the same lap whilst Brian’s NSR was four laps ahead in runner-up spot a few laps behind Kev’s NSR.

Notes:

• Paul was racing with one of the new ‘plastic track spec’ chassis.  This has the guide mounted down the centreline of the chassis which is achieved by moving the guide further back so that it’s still within the confines of the bodywork…  There is also a round magnet in the chassis behind the guide, magnetic effect is well within the 25g limit for our racing…overall, Paul liked it and managed his best results to date with it.
  
• General consensus is that the choice of rear tyres doesn’t have the major effect that it does on a car.

Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:

Seven club members this week for an evening of classic open wheel racing… and SRF Sidecars

Mike Dove Memorial Classic Grand Prix

We had the option to race two different cars, some of us chose to race one car, some chose two cars… and Chris raced three (out of necessity).

Grand Prix - Prewing F1

   

• Two Modified Class Grand Prix cars… Brian’s Vanwall and Ed’s Lancia D50
  

• One Prostock Class Grand Prix car… Kev’s Mercedes W154
  
• Five Open Class Grand Prix cars… Jamie’s Ferrari 553, Mike’s Mercedes W196, Dave’s Mercedes W154, Jamie’s Maserati 250F and Chris’s Maserati 250F
  
• One Prostock Class Prewing F1… Kev’s Lotus 24
  
• One Open Class Prewing F1… Chris’s Brabham BT24
  

Jamie kindly let Chris borrow his Ferrari 553 after his two cars had mechanical failures during racing (like the real thing then! ).  Chris’s Brabham BT24 is now often seen on track, a nice runner it is too.

Talking of Jamie’s Ferrari 553, after a bit of benchwork after practice, it was turned into a great running car.  Sadly, his second car, the Maserati 250F wasn’t such a great runner.
.
Dave did intend racing an alternative car but the front axle was at a funny angle so he opted to race his Mercedes W154 in both sessions, his second run was his best.
.
Mike chose to race his Mercedes W196 in both sessions, the second run was also his best.
.
Brian & Ed both chose to race the same cars in both sessions, Brian’s Vanwall which must be his most consistent car, actually went best on his first run, whilst Ed, racing a Lancia D50 in both sessions had two almost identical runs.
.
Kev opted for two different class cars, the first a Mercedes W154 and the second a Lotus 24, both Prostock Class cars.

   
.
These are the most interesting cars we race, lots of time and effort have gone into them and are some of the various club members favourite cars.
They have to be driven carefully though, with a high ground clearance, narrow tyres and track width, makes them an enjoyable challenge.

Notes:

• Jamie had to leave after the Mike Dove Memorial Classic but very kindly offered to let Ed race his sidecar.  As it turns out, these suit Ed’s driving style perfectly and he really enjoyed racing one for the very first time.  He does have one of his own but it needs painting, I think we may see it sooner than later after tonight.
  
• We are learning how to drive these the most efficient way, tyre management is important to ensure consistent handling.  This is achieved by careful throttle control in corners, trying to keep both rear tyres either side of the slot/braid to prevent tyre degradation on the drivers side wheel.
