Is the Revo Slot Mazda RX7 a Group 2 Class Car?
#1

Our club runs a Revo Slot Grp2 as a Class ie Mk1 Escorts, Alfa club, Datsun 510 etc.
With the release of the two versions of Mazda RX7 by Revo, I was wondering if they are intended to compete against the other Grp 2 class cars.

From basic Pendle specs - if you compare track width with the previous widest Grp 2 car being the Alfa, the RX7 depending on which body version you look at is 2 to 4mm wider in the front Track and 3 to 5mm wider in the rear track. Also they use different Front and Rear hubs which look wider and taller than the Standard hubs the rest of the  Grp 2 cars use.

There has also been some historical discussion in real life about the fact that Mk1 RX7s are two seater Sports cars unlike the other Grp 2 cars which appear to be 4 seater tour car types.

Just intrigued as what everyone else's thoughts are, as I suspect when they are tuned up properly they will be a weapon and likely will out perform the other GRP 2 cars.

It appears to me that Revoslot are introducing a 3rd era of racing cars along with the Porsche 934.
So basically they are late 70’ & 80’s race cars. The existing range of Group 2 cars are all late 60’s & 70’s race cars. And the GT1 & GT2 cars were all 90’s cars.
So the different era cars would not have actually raced each other in reality, but that’s not to say you can’t race them together as slot cars ?

GTO, GTU, GTP

Race against the Porsche 934 as Graham said.

Of course it's always down to club class rules.  We have a Small Sports/Saloons class, max width across the tyre walls 54mm, 9mm wide tyres.  Anything bigger than that goes in our Saloon or Sport class.

I don’t think, I would race the 934 or RX-7 with Revoslot G2 expecting close racing.  These cars may have a ton of potential.

I would 100% expect the 934 and RX7 to perform less than the GT1/2/LMP but better than the Gr.2 cars.

Thanks Guys for the feedback.
It's clear the specs of the RX7s are for a different class/era, they are not compatible with the other Grp 2 class cars.
Hadn't clicked that the RX7 was likely designed to run against the 934s.
Our class rules are specific that you have to run Grp 2 Hubs and Tires which the stock RX7s don't, plus the wider track again would give the RX7 an advantage against the other Grp2 cars.
Potentially the only way the RX7 could race against the other  Grp 2 cars fairly would be to change front and rear hubs and cap the max Track width front and Rear to 55mm.
From a appearance point of view that could make the RX7 look not very authentic plus the obvious flared guards.

Food for thought and plenty to discuss with the other club members.

Hats off to Revo though, if you're going to start a new class it has to start with one car (934).  After all, the Gr.2 cars weren't all released simultaneously.
